NRCs Host Film Screening and Discussion on Padauk: Myanmar Spring on Human Rights Day

In collaboration with International NRCs at the University of Minnesota, University of Pittsburgh, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, IWA co-hosted a conversation with filmmakers and K-12 educators focused on the film Padauk: Myanmar Spring.  This is part of a series of virtual programs NRCs have organized in partnership with Documentary Educational Resources (DER) to bring globally focused films and human rights education into classrooms around the country.

The program focused a spotlight on the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar and the power of artistic expression as a form of non-violent resistance in the wake of the 2021 military coup. While the conflict in Myanmar hasn’t garnered much media attention, it is close to home for many families in the Milwaukee area from multiple ethnic backgrounds with ties to the country. As of December 2024, the junta and pro-military groups behind the Spring Revolution have claimed 6,000 lives, including many pro-democracy activists and civilians.
