UWM’s Center for International Education (CIE), a Title VI National Resource Center (NRC) as designated by the U.S. Department of Education, is supporting the Global Research Fellows Program (GFR) for the 2022-2026 grant cycle. The GRF program is designed to support global interdisciplinary research at UWM around topics related to social justice, equity, sustainability, and globalization. Global interdisciplinary research has been a strong feature of the profile of UWM faculty, despite busy teaching and advising schedules and funding issues that can make travel and field research abroad especially challenging.
The successful candidates will receive a reduction of one course for one semester so as to advance research on topics related to globalization, including its cultural, political, social, economic, and environmental dimensions. Global Research Fellows may also be asked to teach a Global Studies course in the future.
Eligibility
The selection committee will consider proposals from faculty and instructors across the university whose research is global in nature.
Support & Selection of Awardees
The NRC grant managerĀ administers the awards, provides support to language faculty, during and after the award period.
The CIE-NRC Advisory Board is responsible for reviewing the proposals and selecting awardees based on contribution to language learning and campus globalization at UWM, alignment with NRC grant goals and interests, and feasibility of implementation. Selection criteria specific to each award are included in the application.

Global Research Fellows Program
Application Materials
Faculty and teaching academic staff of all ranks are invited to submit their 3-5 page proposals describing their specific research plans for the funding period (Fall 2025 through Spring 2026).
Course Release
In compliance with UWM Office of Sponsored Programs policy, faculty on an academic year contract (nine months) will receive a one-course teaching load release during the spring or fall semester of the fellowship year. One course release is equivalent to 1/8th of the academic year’s salary (or 12.5% effort).
NRC grant funds will buy a faculty member’s released time by paying a portion of their salary so that the equivalent amount of effort can be spent working on the grant-funded project. This will be paid directly to the faculty member over the biweekly payroll schedule and expensed to the grant. Accordingly, the grant will also cover up to 36.4% in fringe benefits for this portion of the faculty member’s salary.
Applicants should discuss which semester they would like to receive their course release with their department chair or program director and indicate their preference in the signature section on the last page of your award packet. The NRC Grant Manager will confirm that your department or program is amenable to the arrangement.
Post-Activity Survey
Recipients will also be responsible for reporting on the impact of their NRC-funded project after the award period. If awarded, you will be required to complete a post-activity survey in Qualtrics. The survey will be included in your award letter and must be submitted no later than May 15, 2026. Failure to complete the survey by May 15, 2026, may affect consideration for future NRC funding.
Global Research Fellows Seminar Presentation
As a condition of the award, GRF recipients will also commit to the full research and presentation requirements during and following the Fall 2025 through Spring 2026 fellowship period.
