CIE-NRC Title VI Program is interested in co-sponsoring events that tie in with the Center’s academic outreach mission, which is to support activities that (1) reflect diverse perspectives, enhance cultural awareness, and generate debate on world regions and international affairs; and/or (2) promote students’ learning and career development in the foreign languages.

Overview

This award aims to support sociocultural language events organized by UWM’s language departments to promote students’ sociocultural competence and language learning in multilingual settings.

  • Maximum Award: $3,000
  • Eligibility: UWM faculty, staff, and student organizations. Priority will be given to first-time applicants and faculty, students, and staff in the critical languages.
  • Allowable Expenses:
    • Supplies and expenses (i.e., materials, printing)
    • Co-curricular learning activities
    • Cultural Events for UWM students and youth in the Greater Milwaukee Community
    • Guest speaker honorariums/travel expenses
    • Other creative and innovative ideas that align with the mission and parameters of the NRC Title VI Grant
  • Note: Grant funds may not be used for food expenses

Application Deadline: Sunday, January 19, 2025

Applicants are responsible for working with their supervisor, department chair, and/or dean to ensure proposed activities have the necessary campus support and approvals for the activity/course to occur.  

The CIE-NRC Advisory Board is responsible for reviewing the proposals and selecting awardees based on contribution to language learning and campus globalization at UWM, alignment with NRC grant goals and interests, and feasibility of implementation. Selection criteria specific to each award are included in the application.

Event Co-Sponsorship Award

Applications for Fall 2024 through Summer 2025 activities will be accepted at this time, but funds awarded must be expended before August 1, 2025.

Please note that if funds remain after all successful applicants have been awarded, the committee may choose to reopen the application to review additional proposals for activities in the spring and summer of 2025.

Award Conditions
  1. Logistical Arrangements: Arrange for speaker/event room scheduling, AV equipment, forms, paperwork, introduction of speaker, lodging, transportation, and all other logistical arrangements.
  2. Publicity: Prepare and distribute all publicity including flyers, news releases, and other forms of publicity. Send copies of all publicity to the Center for Global Studies.
  3. Acknowledgement: Acknowledge support from the NRC Title VI grant program in all publicity including news releases.

**All expenditures must be approved by the NRC grant manager before purchase. Purchases made without prior approval will NOT be reimbursed.**
