In November, Rachel Hegland and Nicole Palasz traveled to Boston to represent the Teaching the World Consortium at the 104th Annual National Council for the Social Studies Conference. There, they presented on IWA’s work to connect global perspectives and civic engagement in the classroom. The objective of their presentation was to provide strategies for K-12 educators to empower youth as co-educators and civic leaders on global-to-local issues.
The Institute of World Affairs (IWA) has played a leadership role in this national network, helping to shape the work of the Consortium. UWM’s International NRC is a proud member of the Consortium, which is a collection of Title VI National Resource Centers from around the country that have joined forces to make global programming and resources more accessible to educators.
With over 100 NRCs around the country focused internationally or on world regions, it can be difficult for teachers to discover what resources might be available to them. NRCs also have different programming priorities and strengths. Some offer globally-focused book clubs or organize virtual exchanges. Others may have significant collections of lesson plans for classroom use. UWM’s focus is on contemporary global issues and civic engagement and expanding learning of world languages in K-12 schools.
