About the ITE Student Chapter at UWM

The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Student Chapter at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee is a vibrant, student-led organization that fosters professional growth, industry connections, and hands-on learning for students passionate about transportation engineering. Officially rechartered in Fall 2023 after years of dormancy, UWM ITE has rapidly grown into an active and award-winning community. The chapter bridges the gap between academic knowledge and real-world transportation challenges through seminars, technical tours, networking events, and community engagement. Whether you’re an engineering student or simply curious about the future of mobility, UWM ITE offers a welcoming space to explore, connect, and contribute to shaping tomorrow’s transportation systems.

Faculty involved in students orgs amplify the learning

March 26, 2025

Faculty involvement in student organizations enhances learning beyond the classroom. Tom Shi, assistant professor of civil engineering, and Yang Li, research associate at IPIT, recently partnered with UWM’s Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) student chapter to lead a tour of TAPCO (Traffic and Parking Control Co., Inc.) for about 20 CEAS students.

TAPCO, a leader in roadway safety solutions, provided students with hands-on exposure to cutting-edge traffic control technologies. The visit also connected students with industry professionals who discussed transportation challenges and career opportunities.

Experiences like this enrich academic learning and spark career interests,” said Professor Shi, encouraging faculty to engage with student organizations.

Faculty interested in mentoring student organizations or participating in industry visits can reach out to Steven Anderson at ander675@uwm.edu.
