Events in October!!

Looking to explore campus and Milwaukee and enjoy the incoming Fall season? Below you can find events hosted by the English Language Academy, UWM’s Campus Activities Board, and within the city of Milwaukee.

Throughout the whole month: Shows at the Milwaukee Public Museum Planetarium

Every month, the Milwaukee Public Museum puts on different shows at the planetarium throughout the entire month, many relating to nature and outerspace. Entrance to these shows is FREE with a general admission ticket.

Thursday, Oct. 3rd: Free entrance to Milwaukee Art Museum

Love art? Want to take a look into Milwaukee’s history? The  Milwaukee Museum of Art is FREE every 1st Thursday of the month. The museum is also hosting the exhibition Portrait of Milwaukee, which showcases Milwaukee’s history through photographs, starting in the 1930s all the way through the 2010s.

Entrance is FREE all day long.

Saturday, Oct. 5th: 10th Annual Lost Arts Festival

Grohmann Museum on Milwaukee School of Engineering’s campus is hosting the 10th Annual Lost Arts Festival, which celebrates of the work in the Museum’s permanent collection including paintings and bronzes of a blacksmith, a shoecarver, lacemaker, glass founder, weavers, and more. Entrance is only $3 for students with valid student ID.

The festival is from 11:00am – 3:00pm.

Wednesday, Oct. 9th: Lyrical Sanctuary

UWM CAB is hosting Lyrical Sanctuary in the UWM Fireside Lounge located in the Union with special guest Christopher Soto in celebration of Latinx Heritage Month. Lyrical Sanctuary is UWM’s open mic night, with spoken artists, music, and art.

Lyrical Sanctuary is from 8:00pm – 10:00pm.

Thursday, Oct. 17th: Student Band Showcase

UWM CAB is hosting Student Band Showcase in the UWM Fireside Lounge located in the Union. Local student bands with be performing to showcase their own work.

The event takes place from 6:00pm – 8:00pm.

Oct. 17th – 31st: Milwaukee Film Festival

The 2019 Milwaukee Film Festival will host over 100 films of various genres from Oct. 17th until Oct. 31st, as well as different events showcasing many of the films and even FREE concerts every night of the festival every night at Hacienda Brewing Company. People can purchase singular tickets or different passes depending on how many films they would like to see. These films will be screened at different movie theaters in the city, including the Oriental Theater near North Avenue, the Avalon theater in Bayview, and the Broadway Theatre Center in the Third Ward.

Friday, Oct. 18th and Saturday, Oct. 19th: The Magnificent Machines of Milwaukee 

Learn about engineering marvels that have come straight out of Milwaukee, such as the motorcycle and the thermostat at this FREE event. This exhibit will include photographs, documents, and some of the actual machines. This is a great way to learn more about engineering and Milwaukee’s history and to practice English!

This event will take place at the Grohmann Museum on Milwaukee School of Engineering’s campus.

Friday, Oct. 18th: MAM After Dark: Mystery

Love solving puzzles and mysteries? Find clues all around the museum at MAM after dark while you enjoy some live music, dancing, drinks, and art. This event takes place at the Milwaukee Art Museum from 7:00pm to 10:00pm. It costs $12 in advance or $14 at the door.

Saturday, Oct. 19th: Yoga at the Museum

The middle of the semester will be drawing close, and most of our students will probably want a much needed break. Get in some peace and exercise while doing Yoga at the Milwaukee Art Museum. This event takes place from 8:15am to 9:45am. They ask for a $15 donation, which includes full-day entrance to the Milwaukee Art Museum the same day. Tuesday, Oct. 22nd: International Graduate Student Movie Night

Looking to improve your English, meet other graduate students, and enjoy hanging out while watching a movie? The English Language Academy hosts international graduate student movie nights. For this movie night, we will be showing Arrival, a sci-fi drama about a Linguistics professor that must communicate with aliens that have arrived before a global war breaks out. This event is FREE and is open to international graduate students only. There will be pizza, good conversation, and movie scene discussions.

Friday, Oct. 25th: Day of the Dead Celebration at the Domes

We love to encourage our students to learn about other cultures and to meet people from other cultures. This Day of the Dead Celebration is the perfect opportunity to learn about this Mexican celebration and its traditions. Learn about the rich history and traditions of this celebration that symbolizes the remembrance of deceased family members. There will be dance performances, mariachi music, crafts, face paintings, and traditional foods and beverages for purpose. This event also takes place at the Domes, Milwaukee’s local botanical gardens. Tickets are $10 and are only pre-sale. No tickets will be sold at the door. Friday, Oct. 25th: Fall Night Fun! at the Urban Ecology Center

This is a great event to get into the American Fall spirit. There will be pumpkin carving, a night hike, and marshmallow roastings over a campfire. The cost is $14. This event takes place from 5:30pm – 7:30pm.

Thursday, Oct. 31st: Dia de Los Muertos celebration

A FREE option for learning about this rich and colorful Mexican tradition is celebrating at the UWM student union. This event is FREE and takes place from 11:00am – 1:00pm in the Union Concourse. There will be live music and dance performances as well as hot chocolate and pan dulce.

Thursday, Oct. 31st: Halloween at the Union

Want to really experience an American Halloween? Come join UWM CAB for Halloween at the union. There will be an escape room, mini golf, and other Halloween themed activities. This event will take place from 7:00pm to 10:00pm. This event is FREE for students. Come dressed in your favorite and most creative costume and get to know other UWM students.
