Events in November!

Every month we like to let our students know what different events are going on campus and in the surrounding Milwaukee community. This is a great way for students to get involved outside of class time and to improve their English. Below are different events throughout the month of November.

Free movies at the Union Cinema throughout all of November

All UWM students can enjoy free movie screenings at the UWM cinema throughout the entire month. This gives students time to relax as well as practice their listening comprehension. A list of movie screenings for the month of November can be found here.

November 2nd – Downtown Bookstore and Coffee Excursion

As the days get shorter and the weather gets colder, there’s nothing like curling up with a good book and a hot cup of Joe. Join UWM’s CAB on this downtown bookstore and coffee excursion in Milwaukee’s Bayview neighborhood. Students will take a trip down to Voyageur Bookstore and Colectivo Coffee. Transportation will be provided for students. Registration begins at 11am in the Union Concourse, and the event goes until 3:00pm. Spaces are first come, first serve. Learn more information here.

November 2nd – 42nd Annual UWM Autumn Pow Wow

November is American Indian heritage month. So, this is a great time to join UWM’s CAB for the this annual autumn pow wow hosted by the American Indian Student Association here on campus to learn more about American Indian heritage. This event will be hosted in the Union Ballroom. Doors open at 12pm with grand entrance at 1pm. The event lasts until 8pm. Learn more about the pow wow here.

November 3rd – Grace Fine Art & Craft Festival 

The Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church is hosting this arts & craft festival where 25 artisans from all over Wisconsin will showcase their work including the following:

  •  Woodwork
  • Photography prints & paintings
  • Mixed-media jewelry
  • One-of-a-kind artwork
  • Organic and vegan body-care products, lip balm, bath accessories
  • Scarves
  • Artisan caramels and chocolates
  • Greeting cards
  • Organic and high quality loose leaf teas
  • Ink illustrations & original artist coloring pages
  • Milwaukee & Wisconsin inspired home decor & accessories

The event will be at Grace Center Great Hall at 250 E. Juneau Ave. and will take place from 8am – 2pm and is free and open to the public. Learn more about this event here.

November 3rd – 9th: UWM Homecoming Week

Learn about this American tradition through a variety of different events hosted by UWM CAB, including Capture the Flag, Pounce Fest, and Men’s and Women’s basketball games. This is a great way to get to know the UWM campus community and to have a great time. See details about the events during homecoming week here.

November 5th – Coming to Milwaukee: Immigration Stories

As international students, this event is a great way to learn more about the diverse community that makes up the city of Milwaukee. Most of our diverse community comes from our city’s immigrants. Come learn about Milwaukeeans’ unique and diverse immigration stories at this event at No Studios located at 1037 West McKinley Avenue from 5:30pm – 7:30pm. The event is free and open to the public and food will be provided by Transfer Pizza. Learn more about this event here.

November 13th – Lyrical Sanctuary 

UWM CAB hosts a monthly mic night in the Alumni Lounge in the Student Union, and at this Lyrical Sanctuary, they will be welcoming alida carlos whaley, a poet and song artist and crafter of medicinal herbs that focuses on personal, ancestral, diasporic, and community healing.

November 14th – Cutting Out Hunger

Help out fellow students while you help out yourself. Bring a non-perishable food item in exchange for a free haircut between 11am and 2pm in the Student Union Ballroom. All food items will be donated to UWM’s food pantry.

November 14th – Strengths for Students

Not sure where your strengths lie? Still unsure about your future career goals? UWM CAB is hosting Strengths for Students. In this two-hour coaching session from 3:00pm – 5:00pm will help you identify and develop your strengths to apply them to your future goals. This event requires pre-registration and takes place in the Student Union room 240. Learn more and register here.

November 15th – MAM After Dark: Friendsgiving

November is the season of Thanksgiving, and we definitely like to celebrate what we are thankful for with our friends just as much as with our family. Celebrate with your friends at the Milwaukee Art Museum with live music, dancing, drinks, and food. Cost is $12 in advance or $14 at the door. November 16th – Friendsgiving at the Red Lion Pub

If the MAM Friendsgiving wasn’t enough celebration for you then you can continue it by attending the Friendsgiving charity event at the Red Lion Pub at 1850 N Water St. The pub will be providing free turkey and guests are encouraged to bring their own dishes. Bell’s Brewery will be present and will donate $1 of every Bell’s product sold to The Movember Prostate Cancer Foundation. They will also match all donations made for the event. The event starts at 2pm and will go until the food is gone. Learn more about this event here.

November 19th – Concert Under the Stars 

Join UWM CAB for a concert in the UWM Planetarium. The planetarium will set the atmosphere by showing a light show of the stars. The event starts at 7:00pm. Learn more about this event here.

November 19th – International Graduate Student Movie Night

The English Language Academy will be hosting another movie night for international graduate students in the Language Oasis (Curtin Hall 189) from 4:45pm – 7:30pm. Students can relax and enjoy a movie while having some snacks, meeting new people, and improving their listening comprehension. November 21st – Milwaukee Holiday Lights Festival Kickoff

This is a great way to learn about the American Christmas and get into the holiday spirit. Pere Marquette Park (900 N. Plankinton Ave.) will be hosting a holiday variety show, featuring live music and dance performances, and one of the city’s largest Christmas tree switch-flipping ceremonies. Free jingle bell rides will also be available until 8:20pm. This event is free and open to the public and starts at 6:30pm. Learn more about this event here.

November 23rd – Celtic Christmas Boutique Arts & Crafts Fair

Another great way to learn about the traditions of Christmas and to support original artisans is by attending this event, which takes place at the CelticMKE center at 1532 N. Wauwatosa Ave., Wauwatosa, WI 53213 from 9am until 3:30pm. Entrance to the fair is free and will feature over 30 vendors with handmade artwork, jewelry, pottery, and other originals imported from Ireland. Guests can also explore the Ward Irish Music Archives, the largest collection of Irish and Irish American sheet music in the world. Learn more about this event here.

November 30th –  Milwaukee Makers Market

Support local artisans even more by attending this event where local jewelry makers, designers, and artists will be showcasing their work for purchase at Discovery World. Entrance to the event is free but general admission is visiting the entire museum still applies. Learn more about this event here.
