Attempted Credit Hours

SN The number of credit hours that the student attempted to complete. Official attempted credit hours is following the rule of the official enrollment, which means any enrollment occurring between the first day of classes and the census date. Attempted credit hours are only considered for credit-bearing courses, not non-credit courses.

Census Date

SN The date that enrollment information is captured for reporting purposes each term. On the census date, the snapshot of enrollment and student credit hours is taken. UWM’s census date is the 10th class day for Fall and Spring semester.

Credit Hours

SN Credit hours are a subset of Units. The number of units of the class that apply toward academic progress for students enrolled in the class. Credit hours are applied toward the total number of credit hours needed for completing the requirements of a degree program.  All courses have units but not all courses like remedial courses have credit hours.

Enrollment

SN The action of registering as a student on a course in a given term. Official enrollment for UWM is based on the enrollment activities occurring between the first day of classes and the census date. Official enrollment activity includes not only registering but also dropping a course(s). FERPA, CDR, and IPEDS have a different methodology to count enrolled students.

Student Enrollment

SN A student who is enrolled between the first day of classes and census date. Students who drop entire classes between these periods are also considered as enrolled students.

Unduplicated Headcount

SN The sum of students enrolled on a course counted only once in a given term. For instance, students are counted once regardless of multiple academic plans or multi-race/ethnicity.

Units

SN A unit of measure representing the equivalent of an hour of instruction per week over the entire term. Units attached to the graded section of a course that are used for tuition calculation or billing. Non-grade sections such as lab or discussion do not have units. While remedial courses do not contribute credit hours toward the degree completion, they are billable and will have units.
