Co-authored by Dr. Michael Zimmer and Dr. Nicholas Proferes and published in the Aslib Journal of Information Management, the paper titled “A Topology of Twitter research: disciplines, methods, and ethics,” has been named as the 2015 Outstanding Paper by the Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence. Dr. Zimmer is an Associate Professor and Director of both the Doctoral Program and the Center for Information Policy Research, and Dr. Proferes received his PhD from SOIS in May 2015, and recently accepted a position as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Ethics & Values in Design (EViD) Lab at the iSchool at the University of Maryland.
Every year the Emerald Group invites the editors of each of its journals to nominate an Outstanding Paper and up to three Highly Commended Papers. The award-winners are chosen following consultation by the editorial team, often comprised of distinguished academics.
Dr. Zimmer and Proferes’s award-winning paper engages in a systematic analysis of academic research that relies on the collection and use of Twitter data, creating topology of Twitter research that details the disciplines and methods of analysis, amount of tweets and users under analysis, the methods used to collect Twitter data, and accounts of ethical considerations related to these projects.
