A new ALA “Legal Issues in Public Libraries” forum will bring together lawyers and librarians to discuss contentious legal issues facing public libraries today. SOIS Dean Tom Lipinski serves as moderator for the forum, whose first session took place at the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Denver last week. Among the issues discussed were questions of pornography, religious expression, and discrimination. Acknowledging variations in local law and library policy, the participants left with a list of best practices: sharing codes of conduct with patrons; following due process when penalizing patrons; and moderating patron behavior without impeding their right to access the library. The forum will reconvene at future conferences.
