SUMMARY:SOIS Research Presentation: Archival Appraisal and Its Impact on Social Justice
DESCRIPTION:Synopsis:\nArchival appraisal is an influential role that archives play in the creation of shaping social memory due to how it shapes the materials available in archives and thus the records available to potential researchers in the future. Appraisal decisions made by archivists can result in archives that are capable of supporting social justice in society if they stem\, at least is part\, from an awareness of the marginalization of certain members of society and are developed in a way considerate of how archives can support or further marginalize disempowered communities. This presentation will briefly define archival appraisal\, social justice\, and will discuss the connections between these two topics and how archives can address them. \nShaun Hayes\, Archives Program Specialist\nUW-Milwaukee School of Information Studies\nWednesday\, March 27\, 2024 | 12:30 – 1:30pm\nNorthwest Quadrant Building D 3rd Floor\nRooms: 3810 / Microsoft Teams\n2025 E. SUMMARY:SOIS Research Presentation: Digital Preservation at University Archives in the United States
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nArchives are known for their vital role in preserving unique materials. Current advances in technology redefined this role by adding a new responsibility for handling and preserving digital content. University archives dedicate time\, effort\, and sources to conduct digital preservation for their digital collections to ensure future access. There is a need to further investigate how university archives conduct digital preservation and explore the challenges encountered. This presentation introduces a large-scale study that focuses on digital preservation at university archives in the United States. The preliminary findings about digital preservation practices and challenges will be discussed. \nMaali Alghnimi\, Assistant Professor\nDepartment of Information Studies\, College of Social Sciences\, Kuwait University\nWednesday\, April 26th\, 2023 | 12:30 – 2:00pm\nNorthwest Quadrant Building D 3rd Floor\nRooms: 3835 & 3845 / Microsoft Teams\n2025 E.
