Abstract
In this talk, we explore the popular culture around comics that was both consumed and created by American youth between 1935 and 1955. In recovering reading practices, social networks, creative activities, and other types of comics-focused engagement, we discuss how young people used and subverted these accessible, abundant cultural commodities to create a vibrant youth-focused print culture, allowing readers to transcend race, class, and gender boundaries and engage with the world around them.
