You are encouraged to communicate with your units (schools, colleges, divisions, departments) about any unit-specific &#8220;best practices&#8221; or guidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Returning to campus? Check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/information-technology\/return-to-campus-technology-readiness\/\">Campus Technology Readiness<\/a> page for guidance and best practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-using-a-uwm-issued-laptop\">Using a UWM-issued laptop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a UWM-issued laptop, that is the recommended option for working remotely and accessing UWM resources. When logging into your device each day, also be sure to connect to the Virtual Private Network (VPN), <a href=\"https:\/\/kb.uwm.edu\/70415\">GlobalProtect VPN<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The VPN\u00a0affords\u00a0several benefits to UWM\u00a0employees that are working remotely. Using UWM\u2019s VPN allows\u00a0you to remotely access your on-campus device, gives off-campus\u00a0access\u00a0to UWM\u2019s\u00a0network\u00a0drives, and\u00a0ensures that you continue to receive\u00a0regular\u00a0updates\u00a0to your computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-remote-desktop-with-vpn-to-a-university-computer\">Remote Desktop with VPN to a University Computer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You may be able to use a personal computer to connect remotely to your UWM computer that is physically located on-campus. Using Remote Desktop allows you to access your files and software just like when you are on campus. You will need to stay connected to the Virtual Private Network (VPN), <a href=\"https:\/\/kb.uwm.edu\/70415\">GlobalProtect VPN<\/a> to use Remote Desktop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For instructions to remotely connect to a Windows PC on campus, see: <a href=\"https:\/\/kb.uwm.edu\/47192\">https:\/\/kb.uwm.edu\/47192<\/a> (requires a PC at home)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For instructions to remotely connect to a Mac on-campus, see: <a href=\"https:\/\/kb.uwm.edu\/46533\">https:\/\/kb.uwm.edu\/46533<\/a> (requires a Mac at home)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-using-a-personal-computer\">Using a personal computer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you lack access to a UWM-issued laptop, you can use a personal computer to perform many work-related tasks. Tasks you can perform include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.office.com\/\">Microsoft 365<\/a> (previously Office 365) email, calendar, and other apps.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Viewing and editing documents that are stored on <a href=\"https:\/\/panthers-my.sharepoint.com\/\">OneDrive<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/panthers.sharepoint.com\/_layouts\/15\/sharepoint.aspx\">SharePoint<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/information-technology\/microsoft-365\/teams\/\">Teams<\/a> or UWM file servers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can install Microsoft 365 Apps on your personal computer at no cost using these instructions: <a href=\"https:\/\/kb.uwm.edu\/45766\">https:\/\/kb.uwm.edu\/45766<\/a> or by viewing this video: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=66oMh7k7SV4\">How to Install Microsoft 365<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can install Adobe Creative Cloud apps using your UWM license and credentials using these instructions: <a href=\"https:\/\/kb.uwm.edu\/49303\">https:\/\/kb.uwm.edu\/49303<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You may need to connect to <a href=\"https:\/\/kb.uwm.edu\/70415\">GlobalProtect VPN<\/a> to access some resources such as network stored files.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Please note: UWM files should not be stored on personal computing devices.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-best-practices\">Best Practices<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To help work remotely in a secure manner, please keep these best practices in mind:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/information-technology\/microsoft-365\/teams\/\">Microsoft Teams<\/a> offers many features, including instant messaging, videoconferencing, conference calling, and file sharing. These tools allow you to collaborate with colleagues from anywhere you have an internet connection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisconsin.edu\/regents\/policies\/acceptable-use-of-information-technology-resources\/\">Password and account credential sharing is strictly prohibited<\/a>, including sharing with other members of your household. All passwords and login information for devices and system logins are required to be kept private.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lock device screens when not in use and keep devices secure from theft by not leaving them unattended in public areas.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be aware of phishing emails. Many online threats come from phishing or online scams, urging you to click a button or follow a link and reveal sensitive information.
