{"id":366,"date":"2019-01-25T18:14:28","date_gmt":"2019-01-25T18:14:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/humanities\/?p=366"},"modified":"2019-04-05T18:07:30","modified_gmt":"2019-04-05T18:07:30","slug":"bending-the-archive-zines-archiving-and-the-digital-humanities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/humanities\/2019\/01\/25\/bending-the-archive-zines-archiving-and-the-digital-humanities\/","title":{"rendered":"Bending the Archive: Zines, Archiving, and the Digital Humanities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Please join us for a roundtable discussion featuring <strong>Jenna Freedman<\/strong> (Barnard Library, NYC), <strong>Milo Miller<\/strong> (UWM and the\u00a0Queer Zine Archive Project), and <strong>Lane Hall<\/strong> (English, UWM).<\/p>\n<p>Zines are non-commercial publications made by ordinary people using a variety of techniques including Xerography, illustration, silkscreen printing, and collage. Often associated with the punk and riot grrrl movements of the 1980s and 90s, zines are ephemeral and idiosyncratic, personal and political, circulated in independent book stores, comic shops and through informal networks of exchange. Thirty years on, zine culture is still vital, and it has begun to reckon with its own history.<\/p>\n<p>As universities, libraries, and other institutions begin to make space for zines in their collections, there are ethical concerns to be negotiated in their preservation, digitization, and in access. This roundtable will discuss key issues in the digital humanities as they pertain to the archiving of zines in particular, and archiving subcultures, marginalized communities, and ephemera in general.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the Speakers:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Jenna Freedman<\/em> is a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/zines.barnard.edu\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">zine librarian<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/leslzine.storenvy.com\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">makes zines<\/a>. She is the Associate Director of Communications at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/library.barnard.edu\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Barnard Library<\/a>\u00a0in NYC.
