DESCRIPTION:Please join the Department of Art History for the opening of Graduate Student Samantha Maloney’s Thesis Exhibition. Face. Off. Faceoff: Mapping African Representations in Western Art Museums aims to investigate how influential representations of African art objects\, cultures\, and histories within Western art museums impact contemporary museum audiences. \nThe exhibit runs from February 28 to April 4\, 2019. \nThe Opening Reception will take place Thursday\, February 28\, 5-7pm with a talk by the curator at 5:30pm. \nA Closing Reception will also be held from 5-7pm on April 4.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an opening reception for Humor and Quiet Resistance: The Graphic Work of Wilhelm Höpfner curated by Art History MA student Kelsey Soya and Stanley William Hayter & The Death of Hektor curated by Mathis Art Gallery staff. A gallery talk by Kelsey Soya will begin at 5:30pm. Light refreshments will be served and the event is free and open to the public. \nHumor and Quiet Resistance: The Graphic Work of Wilhelm Hopfner and Stanley William Hayter & the Death of Hektor\nNovember 15\, 2018-February 14\, 2019\nOpening Reception: November 15\, 5-7pm\nwith gallery talk at 5:30pm\nUWM Emile H. Mathis Art Gallery\nMitchell Hall 170\, 3203 Downer Avenue\nMilwaukee\, WI 53211 \nHumor and Quiet Resistance: The Graphic Work of\nWilhlem Hopfner examines the tumultuous period\nof German history between 1918 and 1940 through\nthe lens of one quiet\, reserved artist’s prints.\nThough called “the morning star of the etch­ing\nneedle” by some German scholars\, Hopfner is\nvirtually unknown in the United States. An intriguing\nsynthesis of Surrealism and New Objectivity\,\nthe prints on display capture the artist’s attempt to\nnavigate the cultural\, social\, and political climate\nof the Weimar Period and early years of the Third\nReich.
