I would like to extend a warm welcome to the Class of 2023 and our new transfer and graduate students – I am excited you are here! Here you will become part of an interdisciplinary community composed of the departments of Biomedical Sciences, Communication Sciences & Disorders, Health Informatics & Administration, Kinesiology and Occupational Science & Technology. To my dedicated colleagues and friends, our focus on CHS’ core values of integrity, diversity, partnership, innovation and community, will guide our steps and create a rich environment where students, faculty and staff, and community partners will thrive.
Personal and professional integrity is the core value which we must all strive towards. Doing the right things, the right way, begins with us. I am hopeful that the College of Health Sciences will be a model for those who surround us as we demonstrate integrity in all that we do.
Diversity of Student Success
I am very pleased with the diversity and wide geographic representation that our new and returning students bring to the College. In the College of Health Sciences, we value the broad range of experiences, cultures, backgrounds and understanding that come from our students, colleagues and friends. Our students can be assured that everyone, from advisors to faculty and staff, is committed to their success as they chart their academic path.
Partnerships are critical for our success. As we continue our collaborative initiative, UWM Partners for Health, together with the College of Nursing, the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare, and Joseph J. Zilber School of Public Health, we remain committed to prepare students for service in health-related environments through interprofessional education and innovative research opportunities. Further, we will continue to seek out and develop partnerships that solidify the College of Health Sciences as a leader in health innovation. Our efforts will promote healthier living in the communities where we live, work and play.
As part of an elite group of America’s top research universities, our faculty are involved in numerous potential groundbreaking research studies. For some, their work even takes them to international destinations. We strongly encourage our students to participate, get their first taste of working intensively with a team, and contribute to groundbreaking innovation.
We stand ready to renew our on-going commitment to serve our vibrant community. Our students complete fieldwork with mentors, volunteer with social service organizations and participate in service-learning experiences. College of Health Sciences faculty, together with students, provide needed services and treatment at specialized clinics. Further, a large percentage of our graduates stay in the area and contribute to the positive health of our community as active alumni.
As we begin a new year, let us recognize the significance of our mission as we continue to “…empower, engage and educate health professionals, scientists and researchers who will lead their fields to best serve the health and well-being of people in Wisconsin and beyond.”
I wish each of you the best for a productive year!
