Graduate Assistants with one appointment of 33 percent or more are eligible for some UWM employee benefits, such as the State Group Health Insurance Program, and additional supplemental dental or vision insurance. This health insurance can cover the cost of additional health care beyond what Student Health and Wellness Center provides for all graduate students. Assistants who enroll will have monthly premiums deducted from their paychecks. If a student has concurrent appointments, please see the Concurrent Appointments section<\/a> for additional health insurance eligibility. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are different kinds of health benefits coverage with different costs, such as coverage for individuals and coverage for families. Benefits are complex and the provisions change frequently. For the most current information, visit the Benefits<\/a> page of UWM\u2019s Department of Human Resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Graduate Assistants may want to pay special attention to the New Employee Benefits<\/a> page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If a Graduate Assistant\u2019s appointment ends in the Spring semester, they will not have health insurance through the summer. If a Graduate Assistant\u2019s appointment continues from Spring to Fall, the student is covered during the summer. If a GA is not sure if they will have insurance over the summer, please contact benefits@uwm.edu<\/a> with any questions. If a GA is not sure if their appointment will continue, please contact the supervisor and\/or program.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please note that if a student’s benefits eligible appointment is terminated or they lose eligibility for coverage, they will receive a Cobra notice that will outline their continuation options. See the Universities of Wisconsin Employee Benefits: Continuation & Conversion page<\/a> for more information on continuing coverage and Cobra rates. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
