This designation comes from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. R1 status puts UWM in the top tier of U.S. research universities. UWM is one of only two R1 universities in Wisconsin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Federal support plays a key role in this research and in&nbsp;maintaining&nbsp;this status.
