Study Abroad Scholarships for Summer and Fall 2023 are available!

1. Log into the UWM scholarship portal and complete your UWM general scholarship application. If you previously filled this out, you just need to update it with more current information – your previous responses carry over.

2. Complete the application for any of the individual scholarships you wish to apply to here.

Unless noted otherwise, the DEADLINE is MARCH 1 – the same deadline to apply at CIE for study abroad for summer or fall.

Berquist Study Abroad Scholarship – Valued between $1,000 and $2,500 

• Any major studying abroad in Summer or Fall 2023 at any non-U.S. destination 

• Preference given to students with demonstrated financial need as shown on the FAFSA first generation student

Study Abroad Scholarship – Valued at $2,000 

• Any major studying abroad in Summer or Fall 2023 at any non-U.S. destination 

• Preference given to a first generation student 

• Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA 

Giovanni Carini Memorial Scholarship – Valued at $1,000 to $1,500 

• Any major studying Italian language 

• Studying abroad in Italy in Summer or Fall 2023 

• Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA 

• Demonstrated financial need as shown on the FAFSA

Leah Fetter Merit Scholarship – Valued between $1,000 and $2,500 

• French major studying in a French-speaking country in Summer or Fall 2023 

• Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA 

• Demonstrated financial need as shown on the FAFSA Ian J. Elliot Memorial Scholarship – $1,000

• Global Studies or International Studies major 

• Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA

Hilda Becher Scholarship – Valued at $1,000 

• Spanish major or minor participating in the Madrid Summer 2023 program Summer 2023 

• Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA 

Ctr. for Latin American & Caribbean Studies Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship (FLAS) – Valued up to $15,000 (includes tuition up to $10,000 and a stipend) DEADLINE FEBRUARY 17, 2023 

• Any major studying Portuguese at the 200-level or higher 

• U.S. citizen or permanent resident 

• Strong academic record (typically a 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA) 

• For Fall/Spring 2023-24 only 

• For the study of advanced Portuguese at UWM or an approved institution abroad

Donald R. Shea Scholarship in Latin American Studies – Up to $500 DEADLINE APRIL 1, 2023 

• Demonstrated academic interest in Latin American/Caribbean Studies through coursework / research 

• Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA 

• Studying abroad in Latin America or the Caribbean or participating in a virtual study abroad in Latin America or the Caribbean in Summer or Fall 2023

Schwertfeger Scholarship – Valued between $1,000 and $3,000 

• Any major studying the German language (preference given to German majors or minors) 

• Studying abroad in Germany in Summer or Fall 2023 

• Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA 

Study Abroad Diversity Scholarship – Value to be determined 

• Full-time student in any major 

• Minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA 

• From one or more group historically underrepresented in study abroad: first generation; diverse ethnic background; and/or disabled
