{"id":1486,"date":"2016-02-09T16:25:17","date_gmt":"2016-02-09T22:25:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/geosciences\/?page_id=1486"},"modified":"2025-10-23T11:43:56","modified_gmt":"2025-10-23T16:43:56","slug":"funding-your-degree","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/geosciences\/students\/graduates\/funding-your-degree\/","title":{"rendered":"Funding Your Degree"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Most of our graduate students receive financial support as a\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/geosciences\/students\/graduates\/funding-your-degree\/ta-ra-fellowships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">teaching assistant (TA), research assistant (RA), or with a fellowship<\/a>. All of these positions provide:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A living stipend.<\/strong>\u202fStipends range between $14,774 \u2013 $22,285 for the 9-month academic year, depending on the type of position (TA, RA, fellowship). Many students also receive some additional summer support. To better understand how far your stipend will stretch, read more about\u202f<a class=\"uwm-c-link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/geosciences\/students\/graduates\/funding-your-degree\/living-and-other-associated-expenses\/\">costs of living in Milwaukee and UWM benefits available to all students<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Benefits including access to health insurance.<\/strong>\u202fThe university pays most health insurance costs, but a student contribution is currently about $50 per month.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Full tuition remission.\u202f<\/strong>Tuition remission means that funded students do not pay tuition. Mandatory fees are not covered by tuition remission.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"uwm-c-link--external\"><strong>Conference travel funds.<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/graduateschool\/students\/financial-support\/travel-awards\/\">Graduate School<\/a> and the Department of Geosciences both provide funds to help all students present work at professional conferences.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of available positions each semester varies greatly depending on faculty grant funding (RA) and enrollment in undergraduate geosciences courses (TA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Awards are competitive based on a student\u2019s record, and all applicants to the program will automatically be considered for each type of award if your application is\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/geosciences\/students\/graduates\/application-procedures\/#a2\">submitted by the given deadline<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/geosciences\/graduate\/application-procedure\/\">.<\/a>\u202fFaculty members with funded RA positions choose the student who best fits that project. TA positions are competitive within the pool of applicants to the entire department.\u202f Fellowship awards are competitive across all UWM graduate students (current and incoming students).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Funded students who make satisfactory progress in their degree program may have funding renewed for up to 2 years (4 semesters) for MS students and 4 years (8 semesters) for PhD students. Renewal could be in the form of a TA, RA, or fellowship, regardless of original funding source. Students often switch between funding sources during their academic career&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Geosciences Department also offers a number of supplemental\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/geosciences\/students\/scholarships-and-awards\/\">scholarships and awards<\/a>. Most of our funded graduate students qualify for an additional UWM Chancellor\u2019s Award, which can add to the base stipend (usually $1,000-$2,000 depending on available funds, offered on a competitive basis).\u202f We also provide many opportunities for our students to apply for money to defray expenses for their field or lab research and present work at professional meetings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"uwm-c-link--external\">Some students wish to join the graduate program without being offered funding, especially those students who would like to undertake part-time graduate studies.\u202f For those students, we recommend learning about financial aid options through\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/onestop\/contact\/financial-aid\/\">UWM\u2019s Student Financial Services Office<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most of our graduate students receive financial support as a\u202fteaching assistant (TA), research assistant (RA), or with a fellowship.
