Chair and Associate Professor Barry Cameron accompanied MS student Megan Barlow and undergraduate student Monica Preston to Parallel 44 Vineyard and Winery in Kewaunee, WI to collect soil samples for a Geosci 525 class project. The soil samples were collected to study the terroir of the vineyard situated in the heart of the Wisconsin Ledge AVA (American Viticulture Area). Owner and winemaker Steve Johnson greeted the UWM group and explained his philosophy on viticulture and winemaking. After a dynamic discussion of Wisconsin terroir, Cameron and the students ventured into the vineyard to select soil sample locations amongst the Petite Pearl vines. MS student Megan Barlow will conduct grain size analysis and major element chemistry on the soil samples to help her understand the terroir of the Ledge AVA.
