Major Requirements

Listed below are the requirements for the Geography major, Geographical Information Track. In addition to the requirements for the major, students must also satisfy all of the university general education requirements and the College of Letters & Science breadth and other degree requirements. Degree requirements will vary depending on when you took your first college class. You are strongly advised to consult your advisor to ensure you stay on track towards a degree. One of the following introductory courses in Physical or Environmental Geography (3 credits)
  • Geog 120 - Our Physical Environment, 3 credits
  • Geog 125 - Introduction to Environmental Geography, 3 credits
One of the Following Introductory courses in Human Geography is required (3 credits)
  • Geog 105 - Introduction to Human Geography, 3 credits
  • Geog 110 - The World: Peoples and Regions, 3 credits
  • Geog 114 - Geography of Minorities in the United States, 3 credits
  • Geog 115 – Globalization and Economic Development, 3 credits
  • Geog 140 - Our Urban Environment: Introduction to Urban Geography, 3 credits
One of the following mid-level (200 or above) regional or world geography courses (3 credits)
  • Geog 213 - Geography of Asia, 3 credits
  • Geog 214 - Wisconsin, 3 credits
  • Geog 216 (510) - Geography of United States and Canada, 3 credits
  • Geog 231 (130) - Muslim Geographies: Identities and Politics, 3 credits
  • Geog 309 - Nationalities and Nations of the World, 3 credits
  • Geog 330 - Europe: East and West, 3 credits
  • Geog 400 - Geography of Population, 3 credits
  • Geog 410 - Gendered Geographies, 3 credits

  • Geog 625 - Intermediate Geographic Information Science, 4 credits
  • Geog 698 - GIS/Cartography Internship, 3 credits
  • Two upper-level techniques courses, in addition to Geog 525, listed in requirements of the core curriculum, 7-8 cr.
    Choose from:
    • Geog 403 – Remote Sensing: Environmental and Land Use Analysis
    • Geog 405 – Cartography
    • Geog 437 - Qualitative Analysis
    • Geog 547 – Spatial Analysis
Required upper-level techniques course (4 credits)
  • Geog 525 - Geographic Information Science, 4 credits
One of the following fieldwork courses (3 credits)
  • Geog 650 - Geography Field Work , 3 credits
  • Geog 654 - Tropical Field Course , 3 credits
  • With approval of the full department faculty before enrolling, students also can fulfill this requirement by completing a minimum of 90 hours of field research in one of the following courses:
    • Geog 489 - Internship in Geography, Upper Division
    • Geog 497 - Study Abroad
Additional Requirements

All students must complete at least 39 credits in the Geographic Information Track, 18 of which must be at or above the 300 level, with at least 15 of those taken in residence at UWM.

GPA Requirements

Courses taken outside geography that fulfill geography requirements will be included in the GPA. Majors must have a 2.000 GPA in all courses for the major, including any transfer work.
