{"id":14827,"date":"2026-10-13T12:19:49","date_gmt":"2026-10-13T17:19:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/freshwater\/?p=14827"},"modified":"2026-10-13T12:25:14","modified_gmt":"2026-10-13T17:25:14","slug":"uwm-helps-launch-international-career-in-lake-ecology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/freshwater\/uwm-helps-launch-international-career-in-lake-ecology\/","title":{"rendered":"UWM helps launch international career in lake ecology"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"lead-in wp-block-paragraph\">Maggie Armstrong loved spending childhood summers in northern Wisconsin on Big Fork Lake in the town of Three Lakes, where she and her family boated, swam and fished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe entire summer was basically built around the lakes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So when the Waukesha native learned, in her first week of college, that it was possible to make a career as a freshwater lake scientist, \u201cI never looked back,\u201d Armstrong said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After earning a bachelor\u2019s degree in water resources at UW-Stevens Point, she wanted to deepen her knowledge. This led her to UW-Milwaukee for the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/freshwater\/academics\/freshwater-sciences-ms\/\">master\u2019s program at the School of Freshwater Sciences<\/a>, where she focused on how humans influence the health of lakes. \u201cWe humans can be a problem, but we can also be a solution,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignright uwm-c-img--right\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/freshwater\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/595\/2026\/10\/CHAN_Inaug_Media-Image_300x200-1.png\" alt=\"Always Dream Bigger\nUWM Inauguration of Chancellor Gibson\" class=\"wp-image-14830\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At UWM she took courses in science, environmental law, nonprofit grant-writing and communicating with the public about lake ecology. She completed a cross-cultural business course through the Lubar College of Business, where she and classmates participated in X-Culture, a program that grouped students from around the world in teams to tackle business challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was good to try to optimize the range of skills and perspectives available to you when you have all these different people on a team,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Armstrong also completed a summer internship in Alaska, where she helped track fish movement and use environmental practices to halt shoreline erosion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After she graduated from UWM in December 2016, Armstrong was ready to enter the field. \u201cI thought, \u2018Lakes are experiencing challenges and I want to be part of the solution.\u2019\u201d But over the holidays that year, her family began pushing her to dream bigger and apply to doctoral programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To get them all off her back, she applied to a single program, funded through the European Union\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/marie-sklodowska-curie-actions.ec.europa.eu\/\">Marie Sk\u0142odowska-Curie Actions<\/a>. To her surprise, she received one of 12 spots for early career researchers studying freshwater lakes. Armstrong was selected for a PhD project with a strong social sciences element and felt her UWM degree was especially good preparation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This program involved dividing her time between universities in the Netherlands and Spain and completing hands-on projects in both countries. Ultimately Armstrong received doctoral degrees from each of the two universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next, Armstrong completed a three-year postdoc on the North Island of New Zealand, where her work included the use of computer models to predict how various factors affect lake health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you had an influx of nutrients from shifting land uses or practices, for example, we could model how the lake would react,\u201d Armstrong said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also led discussions with landowners about the challenges of balancing lake health with profits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her postdoc now complete, Armstrong is back where it all began, on Big Fork Lake.
