{"id":14493,"date":"2026-08-06T14:50:13","date_gmt":"2026-08-06T19:50:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/freshwater\/?p=14493"},"modified":"2026-08-13T15:11:15","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T20:11:15","slug":"mclellan-labs-research-crucial-to-south-shore-beach-restoration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/freshwater\/mclellan-labs-research-crucial-to-south-shore-beach-restoration\/","title":{"rendered":"McLellan Lab&#8217;s research crucial to South Shore beach restoration"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"lead-in wp-block-paragraph\">Melissa Schussman and Maria Steadmon, along with Dr. McLellan were interviewed and their work was featured in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/environment\/2026\/08\/06\/bay-views-south-shore-beach-is-much-cleaner-now-exclusive\/91064534007\/\">Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On a late July afternoon, with temperatures pushing 90 degrees, about 100 beachgoers spread across the sand and water at Bay View\u2019s South Shore Beach, undeterred by Lake Michigan\u2019s brisk, mid-60s water.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parents lingered at the waterline, kids darted in and out of the shallows, more confident swimmers fanned out into deeper water and others settled up the sand with a beach read in hand.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scene felt ordinary \u2013 summer along Lake Michigan \u2013 but it marked a quiet turnaround decades in the making.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s scene now possible at South Shore Beach, which&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/local\/2025\/09\/19\/reconstructed-south-shore-beach-in-bay-view-is-officially-reopen\/86238100007\/\">reopened about a year ago<\/a>&nbsp;after being&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/local\/2025\/09\/19\/reconstructed-south-shore-beach-in-bay-view-is-officially-reopen\/86238100007\/\">moved farther south<\/a>.
