The South Shore relocation and redesign received a 2026 Mayor’s Design Awards<\/a> on May 20 at UWM\u2019s School of Architecture and Urban Planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sandra McLellan, Ph.D., and her lab have been involved with this project since 2000, working together with the city, Wisconsin DNR and the County Parks. After years of sampling the water in the previous beach location, they found large concentrations of E. coli based on the water current in that area. Moving the beach down the shoreline was the simple solution to the problem. Now, beachgoers can enjoy safe, clean water!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Congratulations to the McLellan lab, as well as the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and Milwaukee County Parks for this honor from the mayor!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since 1997, the Mayor\u2019s Design Award has recognized projects that contribute to Milwaukee\u2019s built environment by enhancing public spaces, expanding educational and job opportunities, fostering social connections and setting new standards for development and architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
