They also rely on small boats, remote-controlled vehicles, and a buoy system. Together, these tools help them study Lake Michigan\u2019s life and health.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-l-col uwm-l-col--4 uwm-l-offset--1\"><div class=\"uwm-block-otp-nav \"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-l-buttons--full\">\n<a class=\"uwm-c-button uwm-c-button--full uwm-u-mb-20\" href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/freshwater\/research\/fleet-and-facilities\/fleet-research-vessels\/maggi-sue\/\" rel=\"\">Our next research vessel<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"uwm-bg-gray uwm-u-py-80\"><div class=\"uwm-l-container--base uwm-l-container--overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center heading-separator uwm-u-text--center\" id=\"h-neeskay-research-vessel\">Neeskay Research Vessel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center lead-in uwm-u-mb-40\">The only year-round research vessel on the Great Lakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-l-row uwm-l-row--3\">\n<div class=\"uwm-l-col\">\n<p>The Great Lakes are our living lab. We operate the only research vessel that explores these inland seas all year. Its name comes from the Ho-Chunk language, a Native American tribe in Wisconsin. It means \u201cpure, clean water\u201d\u2014our vision for the Great Lakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the Neeskay became a research vessel, it was an Army T-boat. It served in the Korean War for tug and transport duties. Since 1970, it has powered scientific expeditions around the lakes. Our underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) can descend to a depth of 1,000 feet and is equipped with a camera, a suction device for collecting samples, and sensors for collecting sensitive data like temperature, oxygen, pH and conductivity. The ROV can also shock fish for surveys and collect cores of soft sediment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-l-col\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading size-h3\" id=\"h-great-lakes-observation-system\">Great Lakes Observation System<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/freshwater\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/595\/2024\/09\/buoy-launch-research.jpg\" alt=\"People preparing to launch buoy\" class=\"wp-image-6989\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/freshwater\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/595\/2024\/09\/buoy-launch-research.jpg 750w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/freshwater\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/595\/2024\/09\/buoy-launch-research-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We rely on real-time sensors to monitor Lake Michigan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-p-md\">As partners in the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/glos\/\"><strong>Great Lakes Observing System (GLOS)<\/strong><\/a>, we have access to a variety of instrumented buoys, surface vessel observing systems and autonomous vehicles that collect important physical, chemical and biological data that tell us about the health of the lake.
