Our research advances the goal of ensuring fishable, swimmable, and drinkable water by examining the fate and transport of pollutants from urban, industrial, and agricultural activities. While the school&#8217;s research vessels, advanced infrastructure, and location on Lake Michigan offer an unparalleled opportunity to study the Laurentian Great Lakes, our scientists also investigate other Great Lakes of world, including the African Great Lakes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A significant focus is on the challenges that face Great Lakes, such as the ecological consequences of invasive species, such as quagga mussels, and excessive nutrient loading that drives harmful algal blooms. Researchers examine how local and global changes disrupt food webs, alter fish populations and fisheries, and affect recreational activities along the coast. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By understanding these interconnected processes, the school provides crucial scientific support for the sustainable management and conservation of Great Lakes ecosystems.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"uwm-c-link--arrow\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/freshwater\/people\/?_people_categories_facet=great-lakes-reserach-management\">Meet our researchers<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"uwm-bg-gray uwm-u-py-80\"><div class=\"uwm-l-container--base uwm-l-container--overflow-hidden\">\n<div class=\"uwm-l-row uwm-l-row--3\">\n<div class=\"uwm-l-col\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading heading-separator\" id=\"h-water-weather-and-climate\">Water, Weather, and Climate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Our research examines the complex relationship between water, weather, and climate, focusing on the risk and resilience of human and ecological systems. We investigate how evolving environmental conditions, influenced by shifting weather patterns and climate change, impact lake circulation and hydrology. This includes analyzing how altered seasonal progressions affect coastal resilience, ultimately influencing planktonic food production vital for fisheries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We utilize long term time series and buoy systems that instrument the lake year-round to understand the complex dynamics and interrelationship of climate and weather. We also employ satellite imagery to assess flood risk, a growing concern with extreme weather events. Using legal and economic frameworks, our work evaluates how policies and management decisions, as well as changes in environmental conditions, shape human wellbeing and ecosystem health. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We focus on water quality and ecosystem protection, the use and provision of water services, and hazard resilience, with consideration of trade-offs and equity implications.
