Spring 2022: “Environmental and Health Effects of Water Pollution”
Two-credit, online course meets synchronously Tuesdays, 2:30-3:30 p.m. The course number at UWM is FRSHWTR190.
What you will learn:
- Impacts of water pollution on aquatic organisms and human health
- Sources, transport, fate, bioaccumulation, and toxicity of water pollutants
- Principles of toxicity testing and how effects may be examined at different levels of biological organization
- How toxicity data can be used to regulate and reduce water pollution
Summer 2022: Students who complete the course above or a similar one can register for a summer 2022 lab and field course that includes the following:
- UW-La Crosse: work with fathead minnows and zebrafish to run lab toxicity assays, with an emphasis on behavioral endpoints
- UW-Milwaukee: boat trip on the R/V Neeskay to collect samples on Lake Michigan to test in the lab
- UW-Whitewater: collect aquatic invertebrates to run standard toxicity assays in the lab
Courses are offered through the Freshwater Collaborative of Wisconsin and taught by faculty from UW-La Crosse, UW-Milwaukee and UW-Whitewater.
