Freshwater Colloquium: The Anthropology of Aquaculture

Barry Costa-Pierce will present “The Anthropology of Aquaculture” as part of the School of Freshwater Sciences spring colloquium. The theme of this semester’s colloquium is Trends in Aquaculture: Meeting the Challenge of Feeding a Changing World.

Costa-Pierce is the president/CEO of the Ecological Aquaculture Foundation LLC, which is based in Maine and the Açores, Portugal. He is also a professor II at Nord University in Norway in its ocean food systems Nordic Masters programme, Sustainable Production and Use of Marine Bioresources, which partners with the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, and Holar University, Iceland. He is an emeritus professor at the University of New England where he served as the Henry L. & Grace Doherty Endowed Professor of Ocean Food Systems and coordinator of the graduate program in ocean food systems, director of the UNE Marine Science Center and chair of the department of marine sciencess. He was a co-PI with University of Maine on a $20 million NSF award that established the Sustainable Ecological Aquaculture Network (SEANET) in Maine. Heserved NOAA Sea Grant for more than 20 years.
