Habitat Hotels Plant Monitoring
The hardened shorelines of the Menomonee, Kinnickinnic, and Milwaukee Rivers are dominated by steel sheet piling, making it extremely difficult for plants to grow along the bank, creating an aquatic desert. The Harbor District, Inc. Habitat Hotel underwater habitats are retrofitted for steel sheet piling. These habitats provide multiple vertical layers of habitat including underwater plants, hiding places for fish, and food for fish as they travel between Lake Michigan and Milwaukee’s three rivers. The Habitat Hotels were planted with Water Celery, Sago Pondweed, and Coontial and the success of the plants were accessed. Plant fullness and organism activity was monitored over the summer via kayak and GoPro video.
