The Outreach Department works to educate and involve the community in the research and activities of the School of Freshwater Sciences.

Living in Wisconsin, the Great Lakes and our freshwater resources define and dominate our state.  We depend on our freshwater resources for our homes, drinking water, agriculture, industry, transportation, and recreation.  They affect our weather and create the beautiful landscape that makes the midwest truly unique.  In turn, we have a tremendous impact on them when we engage in industry, energy production, agriculture, or just going about our daily lives.

At the same time, many midwest residents, and especially those living in urban areas, have little direct interaction with the Great Lakes.  Despite being only a few miles away from Lake Michigan many Milwaukee residents never have the chance to experience one of the nation’s greatest assets, let alone understand how very connected they are to it.
