We have all witnessed a growing number of UWM students, employees and community members gather to make their voices heard. UWM is steadfast in respecting the right to free speech. At the same time, it is critical that we maintain a safe and welcoming environment for our students, employees and visitors.
We are sharing regular updates for the campus community on this page.
Status Update: Encampment Agreement
After a coalition of UWM student groups set up an encampment on UWM’s campus last spring, the university and the coalition came to an agreement.
Since the May 12, 2024, agreement, UWM has completed this step: The agreed-upon meeting with representatives of the UWM Foundation was held with student group leaders on May 14 to discuss the student groups’ concerns about disclosure and divestment. The UWM Foundation is independent of UWM and is a separate legal entity.
UWM is making progress on other aspects of the agreement. These are active projects:
- A review of study abroad programs.
- An action team is spearheading additional free speech and cultural programming for campus, listening sessions and education.
