{"id":5406,"date":"2017-05-30T14:46:46","date_gmt":"2017-05-30T19:46:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/finances\/?page_id=5406"},"modified":"2026-04-29T14:22:20","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T19:22:20","slug":"loan-requirements","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/finances\/finances\/receiving-financial-aid\/loan-requirements\/","title":{"rendered":"Loan Requirements"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>If you accept a loan, and are borrowing for the first-time, you will need to complete both a Master Promissory Note (MPN) and Entrance Loan Counseling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All requirements for completing promissory notes and loan counseling for Federal Direct Subsidized\/Unsubsidized, Parent PLUS, and Grad PLUS are completed online at <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/app\/launchMpn.action\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">studentaid.gov<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use the same FSA ID Username you used to sign the FAFSA. If you have forgotten it, you can get help via the <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/help-center\/answers\/article\/help-accessing-account-fsa-id\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FSA ID Frequently Asked Questions<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A loan with a Master Promissory Note (MPN) allows more than one year of loans to be disbursed under a single application.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are not required to accept the full amount that you are offered.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You should access your PAWS account to accept\/reduce\/or decline the offer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While a MPN is only required once, parents borrowing a Parent PLUS and Graduate Students borrowing a Grad PLUS must complete the PLUS Request each year online at <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/app\/launchPLUS.action\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">studentaid.gov<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information on completing promissory notes and entrance counseling for all types of loans, please review <a href=\"\/finances\/finances\/loans\/application-process-promissory-notes\/\">Promissory Notes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nursing Loan Promissory Note <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nursing loans are not considered Direct Loans and have their own promissory notes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nursing Loan borrowers are required to complete a new MPN each year.
