This number reflects average educational costs and is used to predict what it <u>could<\/u> cost to attend UWM. Students may not receive financial aid in an amount that exceeds their COA. Eligibility for need-based aid is discussed below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The COA includes estimates of direct charges and indirect costs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Direct charges<\/strong> are posted to your PAWS account.&nbsp;<em>Examples: Tuition and Fees, and Food and Housing if you live on campus.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Indirect costs<\/strong> are educational expenses that are not posted to your PAWS account.&nbsp;<em>Examples: Books, Course Materials, Supplies and Equipment, Transportation, Miscellaneous Personal Expenses as well as Food and Housing if you live off campus.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use our <a href=\"\/finances\/finances\/estimating-your-costs\/uwm-total-cost-estimator\/\">Estimated Cost Calculator<\/a> to help you develop a more personalized budget. You can simply notify us (no form required) if your estimated COA was created using the wrong housing arrangement. You can request a budget adjustment for the following allowable expenses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the documented rental or purchase of a personal computer,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>costs expected to be incurred for dependent care,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and\/or when actual documented expenses are significantly different than those used in our estimates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A Budget Adjustment <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">may or may not<\/span> increase the amount of financial aid offered. If you have already received aid up to your annual limits, consider borrowing additional aid through a <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/finances\/finances\/loans\/federal-direct-parent-plus-loan\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Parent Plus<\/a> or <a href=\"\/finances\/finances\/loans\/#private\">Private Educational Loan<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Example:<\/strong> Joe is a resident undergraduate student living on campus.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Joe\u2019s COA is $23,588. Joe has been offered $10,000 in financial aid based on his&nbsp; FAFSA results.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If Joe needs extra financial aid, Joe could borrow a maximum of $13,588 in a private loan without having to complete a request for a budget&nbsp;increase.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To find out what your cost of attendance is, go to your PAWS Student Center. You can follow the steps outlined on page 4 of the PAWS Finances tutorial on our Resources page.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you believe you qualify for a budget adjustment, complete a <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/finances\/forms\/financial-aid-forms\/\">Budget Adjustment Request found in the Miscellaneous section on the Forms page<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-determining-need\"><strong>Determining Need<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Student Aid Index (SAI) is calculated from information provided on the FAFSA. It&nbsp;is used to determine your eligibility for need-based aid, like <a href=\"\/finances\/finances\/types-of-financial-aid\/grants-and-waivers\/\">grants<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/finances\/finances\/work-study-student-employment\/\">work-study<\/a>, and <a href=\"\/finances\/finances\/loans\/federal-direct-subsidized-loan\/\">subsidized loans<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Find your SAI\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Listed on your <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/apply-for-aid\/fafsa\/review-and-correct\/fafsa-submission-summary\">FAFSA Submission Summary<\/a> (FSS)\u00a0or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use the <a href=\"https:\/\/bigfuture.collegeboard.org\/pay-for-college\/paying-your-share\/expected-family-contribution-calculator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">College Board SAI Calculator<\/a> to estimate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use this equation to find your need:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Estimated Cost of Attendance \u2013 Student Aid Index = Financial Need<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-calculating-your-actual-cost\"><strong>Calculating Your Actual Cost <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your actual expenses can be direct or indirect.&nbsp;Use the <a href=\"\/finances\/finances\/estimating-your-costs\/uwm-total-cost-estimator\/\">Estimated Cost Calculator<\/a> to estimate your charges.&nbsp;Compare this to the financial aid you have been offered or use the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/finances\/finances\/net-price-calculator\/\">Net Price Calculator<\/a> to get an estimate of your financial aid eligibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you receive more financial aid than you are charged by the university, the extra will be given to you to help you pay for indirect educational costs.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Office of Student Accounts begins processing excess funds approximately two business days after a refund is posted on PAWS, but no earlier than five days before the start of a semester. If you signed up for <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/finances\/refunds\/\">Direct Deposit<\/a>, the excess funds will be deposited in your account at that time. If you have not signed up, a check will be printed and then mailed to your PAWS mailing address.
