The bookend beetles are called Spotted\/Yellow-marked flower beetles (<em>Acmaeodora pulchella<\/em>\u2013\u201cpulchellos\u201d being Latin for \u201cbeautiful\u201d), in the metallic wood borer family <em>Buprestidae<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Azure Bluet Damselfly<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cbright blue in color, like a cloudless sky.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"aligncenter uwm-c-img--center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2018\/12\/c-azure-bluet18-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2018\/12\/c-azure-bluet18-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9925\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2018\/12\/c-azure-bluet18-5.jpg 500w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2018\/12\/c-azure-bluet18-5-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2018\/12\/c-azure-bluet18-5-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Praying mantis<\/strong> \u2013 There are some bugs that seem, well, just a little improbable, and there are some bugs that are really easy to anthropomorphize. Praying mantises check both boxes.  Remember, the spelling of their name comes from their devout posture, not from the predatory aspect of those raptorial front legs. This graceful youngster was photographed in southern Ohio. That\u2019s the down-side of Bald-faced hornets \u2013 you can get pretty darn close to their paper abode before you see it, and they defend it vigorously (and, no, pitching rocks at it from a distance is not an alternative for the curious \u2013 they will find you).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"aligncenter uwm-c-img--center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2018\/12\/c-crab-spider-ripiphorus18-2rz.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2018\/12\/c-crab-spider-ripiphorus18-2rz.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9915\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2018\/12\/c-crab-spider-ripiphorus18-2rz.jpg 500w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2018\/12\/c-crab-spider-ripiphorus18-2rz-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2018\/12\/c-crab-spider-ripiphorus18-2rz-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br> <strong>Crab spider<\/strong> \u2013 There are two nifty bits of camouflage going on here. First, the eternal wonder of a crab spider finding just the right spot to sit. Second, the \u201cfly\u201d that this spider has snagged is actually a beetle named <em>Ripiphorus<\/em> (of previous BOTW fame <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/bug-of-the-week\/its-a-beetle-really\/\">https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/bug-of-the-week\/its-a-beetle-really\/<\/a>). There were lots of sightings this summer of the federally-endangered Rusty-patched Bumblebee (more about that in a future BOTW). Here\u2019s what the finished product looks like <a href=\"https:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/1536346\/bgimage\">https:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/1536346\/bgimage<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pine tree Spur-throated Grasshopper<\/strong> \u2013 Grasshoppers can be tough to identify and even tougher to photograph, and the BugLady has never really been a grasshopper person. The main attraction is a shiny, green, road-kill Japanese beetle. It\u2019s being attended by a scavenging millipede and a daddy longlegs, both of whom are there for the free (and tenderized) protein. The fourth member of the quartet?
