Forest Beach Migratory Preserve is a property of the Ozaukee Washington Land Trust. If you don\u2019t support these two fine organizations, please consider it).<\/p>\n<p>It should come as no surprise to seasoned BugFans to hear that the BugLady and her camera spend a fair amount of time in the warmer months cruising for dragonflies and damselflies.<\/p>\n<p>One of her haunts is Forest Beach Migratory Preserve, a reclaimed golf course in Ozaukee County that was created to be a resting and refueling place for migrating birds and a productive habitat for breeding species. It turns out that what\u2019s good for the birds is good for <em>Odonates<\/em>, too. <a href=\"https:\/\/us1.campaign-archive.com\/?u=77bf270ce9f3dbbe587874a0c&amp;id=162a98c2ef\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scroll down to \u201cRare Dragonfly at FBMP\u201d<\/a>. A number of rare dragonflies and damselflies have found their way to Forest Beach, so it\u2019s on the radar of dragonfly enthusiasts; with more eyes on the place, it\u2019s only a matter of time before new species are discovered (that\u2019s called the Patagonia Picnic Table Effect) (Google it). Eight of the forty-two (so far) species on the property list are considered rare visitors to Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2018\/12\/saddlebags-black18-18rz.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9874\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2018\/12\/saddlebags-black18-18rz.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"845\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2018\/12\/saddlebags-black18-18rz.jpg 845w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2018\/12\/saddlebags-black18-18rz-300x249.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2018\/12\/saddlebags-black18-18rz-768x636.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 845px) 100vw, 845px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Saddlebags are called saddlebags because of the pigmented area on the wings on either side of the abdomen. Red, Black, and Carolina Saddlebags are in the \u201cbroadsaddle\u201d group, because their irregularly-shaped \u201csaddles\u201d are wide. Black Saddlebags (pictured above) are common at Forest Beach from mid-summer on; Red Saddlebags are a little less common; and Carolina Saddlebags, rare visitors to Wisconsin from the eastern and southeastern US, are spotted at Forest Beach fairly regularly.<\/p>\n<p>Fall is an exciting time to be at Forest Beach, because the big guys \u2013 the darners and saddlebags \u2013 rule. On September 11, 2018 the BugLady photographed (and initially misidentified \u2013 thanks BugFan Freda) a fourth saddlebags at the Preserve, a Striped Saddlebags (<em>Tramea calverti<\/em>). Two weeks later she found another one, a different individual!<\/p>\n<p>Striped Saddlebags, named for the conspicuous markings on the thorax, are in the \u201cnarrowsaddle\u201d group because the smooth-edged \u201csaddles\u201d don\u2019t extend very far into their wings. They\u2019re a tropical species that are \u201cvagrants\u201d or \u201caccidentals\u201d here \u2013 not regular migrants (only about 15 species of dragonflies are migratory), but unpredictable wanderers. As a result, they\u2019re a \u201cMost Wanted\u201d species among dragonfly-watchers in Wisconsin and elsewhere. There are small, resident populations in far South Florida and along the US-Mexico border, but they\u2019re more at home through Central and South America, the Galapagos, and the Bahamas. Striped Saddlebags wander farther north than other narrowsaddle saddlebags do.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2018\/12\/saddlebags-striped18-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9875\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2018\/12\/saddlebags-striped18-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1805\" height=\"1289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2018\/12\/saddlebags-striped18-1.jpg 903w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2018\/12\/saddlebags-striped18-1-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2018\/12\/saddlebags-striped18-1-768x549.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1805px) 100vw, 1805px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>See a really nice set of pictures at <a href=\"http:\/\/azdragonfly.org\/species\/striped-saddlebags\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/azdragonfly.org\/species\/striped-saddlebags<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As vagrants, Striped Saddlebags have some big flight years and other years when they mostly stay home, but when they do travel, it\u2019s not uncommon for them to travel in small groups. A huge flight occurred in 2010, when Striped Saddlebags appeared in Michigan, Minnesota, Ontario, and New Jersey &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/cmboviewfromthecape.blogspot.com\/2010\/09\/swimming-in-striped-saddlebags.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an article on the Cape May (NJ) Observatory\u2019s \u201cView from the Cape\u201d BlogSpot<\/a> described the area as \u201cSwimming in Striped Saddlebags\u201d (and clearly, there was some <a href=\"https:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/467584\/bgimage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hanky-panky<\/a> going on). There were widespread sightings again in 2012.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wiatri.net\/inventory\/odonata\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Wisconsin Odonata Survey<\/a> website lists a total of 19 Striped Saddlebags sightings since their first records in 2012, when it was seen in five counties. Of the 19 sightings, 14 are from four southwestern counties along the Mississippi. Along with the individuals seen at Forest Beach in 2018, Striped Saddlebags were recorded Kenosha County in early September and in La Crosse County in late September.<\/p>\n<p>The life cycle of a Striped Saddlebags mirrors that of other saddlebags. Males and females fly in tandem over suitable wetlands (shallow, open, fishless ponds with lots of floating vegetation); he releases her to drop down to the surface to deposit a few eggs, but afterward she returns to him and he re-fastens his claspers on the back of her head as they look for another spot. This prevents her from being pirated by another male.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2018\/12\/saddlebags-striped18-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9876\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2018\/12\/saddlebags-striped18-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1257\" height=\"898\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2018\/12\/saddlebags-striped18-3.jpg 1257w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2018\/12\/saddlebags-striped18-3-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2018\/12\/saddlebags-striped18-3-768x549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2018\/12\/saddlebags-striped18-3-1024x732.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1257px) 100vw, 1257px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The young dragonflies (<em>naiads<\/em>) live under water, feeding on any aquatic invertebrates that they can tackle. Mature naiads crawl out of the water, often under cover of darkness in order to avoid predators, rest, and then split the back of their exoskeleton and pull their body out. When their wings are fully extended and hardened, they are ready for flight.<\/p>\n<p>Both male and female Striped Saddlebags were present at Forest Beach in the fall of 2018. Are there naiads waiting for the water to warm in 2019, or would these tropical dragonflies be too cold-sensitive to survive under the ice?
