{"id":8995,"date":"2017-12-05T08:55:24","date_gmt":"2017-12-05T14:55:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/?p=8995"},"modified":"2017-12-06T09:48:53","modified_gmt":"2017-12-06T15:48:53","slug":"bugs-news-iii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/bug-of-the-week\/bugs-news-iii\/","title":{"rendered":"Bugs in the News III"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Howdy, BugFans,<\/p>\n<p>The BugLady is busy writing about shagbark hickory (for the Friends of the Cedarburg Bog) and Short-eared Owls (for the Western Great Lakes Bird and Bat Observatory), so here are some items about insects, some of which were sent to her by alert BugFans.<\/p>\n<h3>MIGRATORY INSECTS?<\/h3>\n<p>Migration is defined as a seasonal movement from one point to another \u2013 and back. Birds migrate, but do insects? Technically not, because, like the migratory population of the <strong>Common Green Darner<\/strong>, it is generally the offspring of the insects that leave in fall that return and recolonize in spring. Are they all tucked away in tropical rain forests and on Sumatran mountainsides? Van Gogh said \u201cIf you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2017\/11\/08\/562852372\/the-grasshopper-in-the-van-gogh\">Take a look at this article.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>UNSUNG HURRICANE SURVIVORS<\/h3>\n<p>Fire ants are aggressive, invasive ants from central South America that have changed the ecological landscape along the southern edge of the country (and are poised to spread the love). <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.extension.org\/pages\/9725\/geographic-distribution-of-fire-ants\">Check this article out<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/1200946\/bgimage\">Here\u2019s a fire ant ready to deploy both\/either of its \u201cbusiness ends\u201d.\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0They are a physical threat to wildlife, livestock, pets, and humans, they negatively affect biodiversity, and they\u2019ve laughed off the chemical and mechanical deterrents we\u2019ve thrown at them for decades. You would think that the 40\u201d of rain delivered by Hurricane Harvey would knock them back a bit. Here are two of them:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/news\/2017\/05\/where-have-all-insects-gone\">Where Have All Insects Gone?<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/ottawacitizen.com\/news\/local-news\/canada-is-actually-running-short-of-bugs\">Canada is Actually Running Short of Bugs<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A survey method based on how many bugs are hitting the windshield is the BugLady\u2019s kind of science.<\/p>\n<p>And there\u2019s more to the discussion because, as John Muir once said, &#8220;When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe\u201d (Leonardo Da Vinci said it a bit earlier &#8211; \u201cRealize that everything connects to everything else.\u201d). The problem?
