These pictures are a tribute to the joy of stumbling into the right place at the right time. If such a thing is even possible, the collection may be a bit \u201cdragonfly-heavy.\u201d Sing along. Tap your foot. Or not. \u201cOn the First Day of Christmas, the BugLady gave to me&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>One Common Green Darner<\/h3>\n<p>The long drought is over. \u201cGetting a good shot of a Common Green Darner\u201d has been on the BugLady\u2019s wish list for years. Instead of bursting from the grass and flying away snickering, this lovely young lady posed patiently (albeit against a background that the BugLady would not have chosen) as the BugLady crawled around on her hands and knees, changing lenses, humming a little. <\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2013\/12\/chr-grn-darner13-dbrz.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2013\/12\/chr-grn-darner13-dbrz.jpg\" alt=\"chr-grn-darner13-dbrz\" width=\"500\" height=\"357\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2994\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2013\/12\/chr-grn-darner13-dbrz.jpg 500w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2013\/12\/chr-grn-darner13-dbrz-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Masked Hunter Nymph<\/h3>\n<p>Adult masked hunters are fearsome predators in the Assassin Bug bunch who pack a hefty wallop with their stabbing\/piercing mouthparts. Not, from what the BugLady reads, an encounter one soon forgets. Masked Hunter nymphs, like this one found recently in a stack of handkerchiefs, travel around <em>incognito<\/em>, their sticky exoskeleton covered with grit that attaches from their surroundings. A technical explanation for a miracle of Nature.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2016\/10\/chr-exuvia-wlkng-stick13-1rz.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2016\/10\/chr-exuvia-wlkng-stick13-1rz.jpg\" alt=\"chr-exuvia-wlkng-stick13-1rz\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2990\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2016\/10\/chr-exuvia-wlkng-stick13-1rz.jpg 500w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2016\/10\/chr-exuvia-wlkng-stick13-1rz-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2016\/10\/chr-exuvia-wlkng-stick13-1rz-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Fairy Shrimp<\/h3>\n<p>Most of the BugLady\u2019s photo-editing is pretty basic&mdash;crop and contrast, and then, because she takes pictures deep in the vegetation where the very air is green, adjust the white balance. Every once in a while, she dabbles in Photoshop&mdash;here a blameless fairy shrimp treated with the \u201cdifference clouds\u201d filter emerges as an ET. Well, not very fast.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2013\/12\/chr-slug-tabeaux13-4rz.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2013\/12\/chr-slug-tabeaux13-4rz.jpg\" alt=\"chr-slug-tabeaux13-4rz\" width=\"500\" height=\"253\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3044\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2013\/12\/chr-slug-tabeaux13-4rz.jpg 500w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2013\/12\/chr-slug-tabeaux13-4rz-300x152.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Slaty Skimmer<\/h3>\n<p>The BugLady had no idea who this was when she was photographing it, only that she\u2019d never seen it before.  <a href=\"http:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/288478\/bgimage\">This striking juvenile male slaty skimmer<\/a> surely doesn&#8217;t look like his equally-awesome Old Man. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2013\/12\/chr-meadowhawk-vrgtd-tn13-2rz.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2013\/12\/chr-meadowhawk-vrgtd-tn13-2rz.jpg\" alt=\"chr-meadowhawk-vrgtd-tn13-2rz\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3045\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2013\/12\/chr-meadowhawk-vrgtd-tn13-2rz.jpg 500w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2013\/12\/chr-meadowhawk-vrgtd-tn13-2rz-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2013\/12\/chr-meadowhawk-vrgtd-tn13-2rz-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Green Lacewing<\/h3>\n<p>Who can forget the voracious lacewing nymphs that nibbled their way through the aphid colonies on Cup plant this summer? This creepy ornament, a Carolina locust, was left dangling long after its predator (Crab spider? Ambush bug?
