Fingers crossed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the Bug Season winds down, the BugLady would like to celebrate summer by sharing a baker\u2019s dozen of the pictures she\u2019s taken in the past few months. Most of these critters have had a BOTW of their own over the years, so the links to the UWM Field Station website are included for BugFans who want \u201cthe rest of the story.\u201d Awesome job, BugFan\/Web-guy Homer\u2014thanks, as always.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-acanolonia-planthopper-nympth\"><em>Acanolonia<\/em> Planthopper Nympth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The BugLady gets a charge out these tiny nymphs that work the plant stems, feeding on plant juices. The waxy filaments they generate allegedly discourage predators. The BugLady spied a shiny <em>Phragmites<\/em> leaf, and when she turned over the leaf above it, she found a vision in green. Like other biting flies, Dad prefers nectar, but Mom needs a blood meal in order to lay eggs. The books say that she targets \u201clarge mammals\u201d (generally eschewing humans in favor of livestock, but for humans who do get bitten, it\u2019s a memorable experience). There\u2019s speculation that this is \u201c<em>Jimmy Crack Corn\u2019s<\/em>\u201d Blue-tail fly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"aligncenter uwm-c-img--center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2016\/10\/bl-horsefly14-1brz.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2016\/10\/bl-horsefly14-1brz.jpg\" alt=\"bl-horsefly14-1brz\" class=\"wp-image-2350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2016\/10\/bl-horsefly14-1brz.jpg 700w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2016\/10\/bl-horsefly14-1brz-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-black-swallowtail-caterpillar\">Black Swallowtail Caterpillar<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Also known as the Parsley Swallowtail (<em>Papilio polyxenes<\/em>), this lovely larva is practicing camouflage via disruptive coloration, like a zebra. In the mottled sunlight where it feeds, stripes make it difficult for predators to figure out the caterpillar\u2019s shape. As it dangled, it split the skin on its back and emerged. The conspicuous, red coloration is temporary; it will darken again. Imagine\u2014a three-inch-long dragonfly once fit in that 1 \u00bc\u201d shell! Note the whereabouts of the female bluet (on the right) (nice meniscus, too!). Many male dragonflies and damselflies guard their ladies as they deposit eggs (oviposit) in the water and in stems of aquatic vegetation. Some species patrol the airways above (hover guarding), and others retain the hold they put on the female\u2019s head during mating (contact guarding). The larvae chew extensive tunnels (galleries) just under the tree\u2019s bark, permanently interrupting the tree\u2019s \u201cplumbing,\u201d and with that, its ability to move nutrients up and down between roots and crown. Researchers are seeing a rise in populations of woodpeckers that are able to flake off the bark and get at the EAB larvae. <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/bug-of-the-week\/emerald-ash-borer\/\">Emerald Ash Borer<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"aligncenter uwm-c-img--center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2016\/10\/EAB14-1rz.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2016\/10\/EAB14-1rz.jpg\" alt=\"eab14-1rz\" class=\"wp-image-2361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2016\/10\/EAB14-1rz.jpg 500w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2016\/10\/EAB14-1rz-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2016\/10\/EAB14-1rz-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And a happy one \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-monarch\">Monarch<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The warnings were dire. Watchers at south-bound migration points last fall reported record low numbers, and only a very small part of the overwintering site in Mexico was occupied. And yet. And yet! Great monarch numbers in this area all summer, and the \u201cGen 5\u201d monarchs (the fifth generation north of Mexico and the only ones that get tagged) are headed south.
