{"id":17459,"date":"2026-09-23T08:33:36","date_gmt":"2026-09-23T13:33:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/?p=17459"},"modified":"2026-09-23T08:35:22","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T13:35:22","slug":"genista-broom-moth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/bug-of-the-week\/genista-broom-moth\/","title":{"rendered":"Genista Broom Moth"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Howdy, BugFans,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the BugLady was wandering around in a patch of Baptisia\/Blue False Indigo in mid-summer, she noticed bunches of caterpillars under webs on the leaves (thanks to BugFan Freda, who got to the ID of the caterpillars much faster than the BugLady would have). &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">[Botanical note: Blue False indigo (Baptisia australis) (from the Greek \u201c<em>bapto<\/em>,\u201d for \u201cto dip or dye\u201d) is a native prairie plant whose sap was used by both Indians and settlers to make a blue dye.\u00a0The dye wasn\u2019t very dark and wasn\u2019t very permanent, and everybody was happy when the non-native \u201ctrue\u201d indigo (<em>Indigofera tinctoria<\/em>) was introduced from Africa\/Asia.\u00a0<em>Baptisia<\/em> blooms spectacularly at the end of May, and bumble bees love it.]\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignleft uwm-c-img--left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/09\/b-false-indigo12-2rz-300x300.webp\" alt=\"a patch of false indigo\" class=\"wp-image-17460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/09\/b-false-indigo12-2rz-300x300.webp 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/09\/b-false-indigo12-2rz-150x150.webp 150w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/09\/b-false-indigo12-2rz.webp 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption>false indigo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They were caterpillars of a Crambid moth (family Crambidae) named the Genista broom moth, aka the Genista caterpillar aka the Sophora worm (it feeds on plants in the genus <em>Sophora<\/em>).\u00a0It\u2019s a native species, but it eats some non-native landscape plants and garden escapees along with native vegetation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One source speculated that it may be a Mexican species that has moved north. If so, it has been successful &#8211; its journeys have taken it over much of the US (and the Caribbean), except for our northwest quadrant and the far, far Northeast.\u00a0It remains more common in the South than in the North.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mature caterpillars are about an inch long, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bugguide.net\/node\/view\/1743292\/bgimage\">moths<\/a> have wingspans of one to one-and-one-quarter inches.\u00a0The caterpillars have (harmless) long, white hairs sprouting from raised, black and white dots.\u00a0The coloring of both the moth and the caterpillar is considered \u201c<em>aposematic<\/em>\u201d \u2013 warning &#8211; coloration.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like <em>Baptisia<\/em> (and lupine, <em>Wisteria,<\/em> Scotch broom\u00a0(a European import that\u2019s invasive in parts of America), Acacia, and <em>Sophora<\/em>) many of the caterpillar host plants are in the Pea family, but it\u2019s also found on other plants.\u00a0Many of its host plants have toxic alkaloids in their leaves that deter grazers, but not Genista caterpillars, which store the chemicals in their bodies, making the caterpillars bitter and\/or toxic to most predators.\u00a0Baptisia is toxic, but not lethal, to humans and livestock (a few folks showed up in an ER in Texas, once, after mistaking the very young plants for asparagus).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The caterpillars are social feeders that browse on leaves, making webs as they go. They may cause aesthetic\/cosmetic damage or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bugguide.net\/node\/view\/600403\/bgimage\">defoliation<\/a>, but established plants can survive a heavy year.\u00a0Genista broom moths have periodic population irruptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are multiple generations Down South, where some may overwinter as moths, but here in God\u2019s Country, there\u2019s probably only one generation.\u00a0They (here) overwinter as pupae near their host plant and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bugguide.net\/node\/view\/624940\">complete<\/a> their metamorphosis in spring.\u00a0In the far South, where they\u2019re in the air all year, they may pupate beneath the webbing they feed under.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the North Carolina Extension folks say, \u201c<em>the moths emerge the following year to mate and <a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bugguide.net%2Fnode%2Fview%2F343390%2Fbgimage&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cweyenb43%40uwm.edu%7Cf5418b88f60b481f056c08df192b3cfa%7C0bca7ac3fcb64efd89eb6de97603cf21%7C0%7C0%7C639257346193013033%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C80000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=N2oSjZ2a%2F84HbWuIBFy%2By%2BkzXBoIKZ5ikQUjP6JXY3k%3D&amp;reserved=0\">lay eggs<\/a>\u201d<\/em> <em>\u201cfrom which hatch the tiny, hairy caterpillars that soon grown into larger hairy caterpillars.<\/em>\u201d\u00a0They mate at night, and the caterpillars are generally
