{"id":17344,"date":"2026-07-29T09:28:44","date_gmt":"2026-07-29T14:28:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/?p=17344"},"modified":"2026-07-30T09:39:24","modified_gmt":"2026-07-30T14:39:24","slug":"dun-skipper-butterflies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/bug-of-the-week\/dun-skipper-butterflies\/","title":{"rendered":"Dun Skipper Butterflies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Greetings, BugFans,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seasoned BugFans know that the BugLady\u2019s relationship with skipper butterflies is fraught.&nbsp;These are small, speedy butterflies, most of which are either orange and brown, or brown and orange. Her interactions with skippers always start with the question, \u201cWhat is it?\u201d and end with \u201cAre you&nbsp;<em>sure<\/em>?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She\u2019s (usually) pretty sure about Dun Skippers (<em>Euphyes vestris<\/em>), family&nbsp;Hesperiidae (the Skippers)&nbsp;and subfamily&nbsp;Hesperiinae (the Grass Skippers, so-called because the caterpillars of most species feed on and shelter in the leaves of grasses and sedges).&nbsp;They\u2019re also known as the Dun Sedge Skipper and the Sedge Witch.&nbsp;Witch?&nbsp;They\u2019re one of three skippers (the others are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bugguide.net\/node\/view\/2068070\/bgimage\">Northern Broken-dash<\/a>,&nbsp;and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bugguide.net\/node\/view\/2135356\/bgimage\">Little Glassywing<\/a> whose flight periods overlap and who are called the Three Witches.&nbsp;The \u201cMinnesota Seasons\u201d website quips that they are thus named \u201c<em>because their dark wings make it difficult to tell \u2018which one is which<\/em>.\u2019\u201d&nbsp;They occur in North America in grasslands and along moist stream, wetland, and woodland edges east of the Great Plains. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignleft uwm-c-img--left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/07\/skipper-dun20-1-300x215.webp\" alt=\"Dun Skipper butterfly on a rock\" class=\"wp-image-17347\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/07\/skipper-dun20-1-300x215.webp 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/07\/skipper-dun20-1.webp 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption>Dun Skipper<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">[Nota Bene: the BugLady regrets, whenever she sees a range map like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bugguide.net\/node\/view\/18403\/data\">this<\/a>, not buying, decades ago, a copy of a&nbsp;<em>National Enquirer<\/em>&nbsp;in the checkout lane that featured a story about how a giant earthquake was going to fracture the continent from north to south along the Mississippi River. The accompanying map showed the Mississippi drawn along the western edge of Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, etc.]&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignright uwm-c-img--right\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/07\/skipper-dun-female22-3rz-300x215.webp\" alt=\"Female Dun Skipper on a green leaf\" class=\"wp-image-17350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/07\/skipper-dun-female22-3rz-300x215.webp 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/07\/skipper-dun-female22-3rz.webp 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption>Female Dun Skipper<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But we digress.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dun Skippers&nbsp;are&nbsp;small (about 1\u201d to 1 \u00bd\u201d wingspread), deep chocolate-brown skippers that sport a few pale spots on the upper surface of the forewing if they are females, and a diagonal black line if they are males.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They like wetlands because the caterpillar host plants are sedges.&nbsp;Various sources report that Dun Skippers feed on the&nbsp;sun sedge (<em>Carex heliophila<\/em>), tussock sedge (<em>Carex stricta<\/em>)<em>,<\/em>&nbsp;and Chufa\/Nut grass (<em>Cyperus esculentus<\/em>), but the estimable Butterflies of Massachusetts website states that \u201c<em>It is amazing and unfortunate that the exact host plant used by Dun Skipper in Massachusetts is not known,<\/em>\u201d and they speculate that because of their wide distribution, Dun Skippers probably also use some grass species.&nbsp;Adults sip nectar from white, pink, and purple flowers, and males also absorb minerals and moisture from damp ground, carcasses, and animal droppings (feels like there\u2019s a Joseph Conrad allusion in there somewhere).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignleft uwm-c-img--left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/07\/skipper-dun-male25-2rz-300x209.webp\" alt=\"Male Dun Skipper on a green leaf\" class=\"wp-image-17348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/07\/skipper-dun-male25-2rz-300x209.webp 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/07\/skipper-dun-male25-2rz.webp 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption>Male Dun Skipper<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Males scan for females from perches on vegetation during the first half of summer.&nbsp;Eggs are laid in the middle of sedge leaves, and when the caterpillars hatch, they feed nocturnally on the leaves and make shelters by rolling or webbing them together into tubes.&nbsp;They overwinter as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bugguide.net\/node\/view\/1038810\/bgimage\">caterpillars<\/a>, resume feeding in spring, and then pupate in a silk-lined shelter low on the host plant, emerging as adults in very late spring\/early summer.&nbsp;There\u2019s one brood per year in our neck of the woods, but more in the South.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dun Skippers have a wide range and are adaptable enough to use a variety of habitats, so they\u2019re predicted to do well in a warming climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The BugLady<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Greetings, BugFans, Seasoned BugFans know that the BugLady\u2019s relationship with skipper butterflies is fraught.&nbsp;These are small, speedy butterflies, most of which are either orange and brown, or brown and orange.
