(The days are getting longer, you know.) This one is on a Small Yellow Lady\u2019s Slipper!\u00a0They don\u2019t spin trap webs, and orchids give them a nice platform on which to wait for pollinators, though some might have a long wait because not all orchids are pollinated by insects.\u00a0The BugLady has a color slide of a Bog candle orchid with a white crab spider fitting neatly onto a horizontal flower.\u00a0Just as there is an orchid-mimic mantis, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.notesfromtheroad.com\/roam\/flower-crab-spider.html\">there\u2019s an Orchid mimic crab spider<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"has-alpha-channel-opacity uwm-u-clear-sibling\" \/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignleft uwm-c-img--left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/01\/moth-tufted-bird-dropping25-1rz.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/01\/moth-tufted-bird-dropping25-1rz-300x300.webp\" alt=\"Tufted Bird Lime\/Bird-Dropping Moths\" class=\"wp-image-16759\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/01\/moth-tufted-bird-dropping25-1rz-300x300.webp 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/01\/moth-tufted-bird-dropping25-1rz-150x150.webp 150w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/01\/moth-tufted-bird-dropping25-1rz-768x768.webp 768w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/01\/moth-tufted-bird-dropping25-1rz.webp 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading size-h3\" id=\"h-tufted-bird-lime-bird-dropping-moths\">Tufted Bird Lime\/Bird-Dropping Moths<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tufted Bird Lime\/Bird-Dropping Moths look marbled to the BugLady.\u00a0Jim Sogarrd, author of\u00a0<em>Moths and Caterpillars of the North Woods<\/em>, tells a story about attempting to collect a bird-dropping moth from the side of a building, only to discover that it actually was a bird dropping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"has-alpha-channel-opacity uwm-u-clear-sibling\" \/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignright uwm-c-img--right\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/01\/fly-robber25-1rz.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/01\/fly-robber25-1rz-300x214.webp\" alt=\"Robber Fly\" class=\"wp-image-16761\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/01\/fly-robber25-1rz-300x214.webp 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/01\/fly-robber25-1rz-768x548.webp 768w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/01\/fly-robber25-1rz.webp 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading size-h3\" id=\"h-robber-fly\">Robber Fly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Robber flies are carnivorous flies that come in quite <a href=\"https:\/\/wisconsinbutterflies.org\/robberfly\">a variety of sizes and shapes<\/a>.\u00a0Larger species, <a href=\"https:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/319451\/bgimage\">like this green-eyed beauty<\/a>, can gather bees, butterflies, grasshoppers, dragonflies, and even cicadas for lunch.\u00a0Others are great <a href=\"https:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/2119764\/bgimage\">bumble bee mimics<\/a>, and still others, like this small fly sitting on a daisy fleabane, capture mosquitoes and gnats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"has-alpha-channel-opacity uwm-u-clear-sibling\" \/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignleft uwm-c-img--left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/01\/hackberry-emperor25-1rz-e1767382537800.webp\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2026\/01\/hackberry-emperor25-1rz-300x214.webp\" alt=\"Hackberry Emperor Butterfly\" class=\"wp-image-16763\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading size-h3\" id=\"h-hackberry-emperor-butterflies\">Hackberry Emperor Butterflies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some kinds of caterpillars feed on a variety of plants, but Hackberry Emperor caterpillars eat only one thing and so can live only where Hackberry trees grow\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/2116852\/bgimage\">no hackberry, no Emperor<\/a>.\u00a0This one was posing under the roof overhang of the Barn, at Riveredge.\u00a0Adults rarely feed on flowers, preferring tree sap, rotting fruit, carrion, and dung, and they collect minerals from damp\/muddy soil with their proboscis. <a href=\"https:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/1450763\/bgimage\">Their top side is handsome, too<\/a>. They\u2019re not pollinators. When they do visit flowers, they don\u2019t touch down with their feet, and they avoid putting their antennae on the flower.
