The BugLady sent her pictures of blue, green, purple, orange, red, and a variety of multi-colored dragons and damsels.\u00a0The BugLady promises that BOTW is not going to march through the entire list of North American dragonflies and damselflies, but, oh my, isn\u2019t this a handsome dragonfly!\u00a0 Plus, it\u2019s being photobombed in one shot by a brilliantly-orange Eastern Amberwing dragonfly (interestingly, one of the BugLady\u2019s Facebook friends also posted a shot of an Amberwing perched on a Jade Clubtail). \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BugLady hasn\u2019t seen this species yet \u2013 thanks, as always, to BugFan Freda for sharing her pictures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignleft uwm-c-img--left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2025\/03\/jade-clubtail2rz-300x200.webp\" alt=\"Jade cubtail\" class=\"wp-image-16043\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2025\/03\/jade-clubtail2rz-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2025\/03\/jade-clubtail2rz.webp 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Clubtails are called Clubtails because the males of many (but not all) species have noticeably flattened and widened segments that form \u201cclubs\u201d on the distal end of their abdomen.\u00a0Females\u2019 clubs are minimal-to-absent.\u00a0Clubtails are in the family Gomphidae &#8211; as a group, the Gomphidae (which also includes Dragonhunters, Snaketails, Spinylegs, and Sanddragons) are medium-sized (1 \u00bd\u201d to 2 \u00bd\u201d), speedy, early-flying dragonflies, some of which like moving water and others of which prefer their water still.\u00a0Unlike most other dragonflies, whose eyes meet or nearly meet at the tops of their heads, Clubtails\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/741140\">eyes are distinctly separated<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Immature Gomphids (naiads) burrow into the muck, with eyes protruding (the better to see their prey, small invertebrates, swimming by, and with the tip of the abdomen exposed, for breathing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignright uwm-c-img--right\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2025\/03\/Arigomphus-submedianus-Jackson-Park-MKE-21-1-300x200.webp\" alt=\"Arigomphus submedianus Wyalusing SP\" class=\"wp-image-16045\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2025\/03\/Arigomphus-submedianus-Jackson-Park-MKE-21-1-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2025\/03\/Arigomphus-submedianus-Jackson-Park-MKE-21-1.webp 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGomphos\u201d is from the Greek for nail or bolt, an allusion to their abdomens.\u00a0There are about 100 species in the family in North America and some can be tricky to tell apart (the males\u2019 claspers are diagnostic).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adult Gomphids often perch and hunt on and near the ground, where despite their spectacular patterns, they can be hard to spot \u2013 their sometimes-<a href=\"https:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/970474\">bold color patterns resulting in disruptive coloration<\/a>. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignleft uwm-c-img--left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2025\/03\/jade-clubtail1rz-300x200.webp\" alt=\"Jade cubtail male and female\" class=\"wp-image-16044\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2025\/03\/jade-clubtail1rz-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2025\/03\/jade-clubtail1rz.webp 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Both males and females are seen \u201c<em>obelisking<\/em>\u201d \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/1218643\/bgimage\">perching with the tip of the abdomen raised<\/a>, which is thought to help with temperature control\u00a0and which is also used by males as an aggressive posture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>JADE CLUBTAILS (<em>Arigomphus submedianus<\/em>)are in the genus\u00a0<em>Arigomphus<\/em>\u00a0(the Pond Clubtails), an exclusively North American genus.\u00a0<em>Arigomphus<\/em>, prefer their water still.\u00a0They\u2019re a pretty landlocked species, ranging from Texas, north through mid-continent to Wisconsin and Minnesota, where they\u2019re found in lakes, rivers, streams, and mud-bottomed ponds and sloughs.\u00a0They are common in Illinois but have been recorded only in the southern third of Wisconsin.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignright uwm-c-img--right\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"274\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2025\/03\/Arigomphus-submedianus-Wyalusing-SP-274x300.webp\" alt=\"Arigomphus submedianus Wyalusing\" class=\"wp-image-16046\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2025\/03\/Arigomphus-submedianus-Wyalusing-SP-274x300.webp 274w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2025\/03\/Arigomphus-submedianus-Wyalusing-SP.webp 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 274px) 100vw, 274px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Pairs gather on shoreline vegetation.\u00a0Males don\u2019t guard females as they oviposit, which, because she lacks a real ovipositor, she accomplishes by allowing water to wash eggs from the tip of her abdomen. A gelatinous sac causes the eggs to stick to rocks and plants.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/1455474\/bgimage\">Naiads are sturdy<\/a>.
