{"id":14593,"date":"2024-01-24T08:29:33","date_gmt":"2024-01-24T14:29:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/?p=14593"},"modified":"2024-01-24T08:29:35","modified_gmt":"2024-01-24T14:29:35","slug":"cereal-bug","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/bug-of-the-week\/cereal-bug\/","title":{"rendered":"Cereal bug"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"size-p-sm\">Note: All links leave to external sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Greetings, BugFans,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BugLady loves finding an insect she\u2019s never seen before.\u00a0When she saw it walking along a cordwalk (boardwalk on sand) in the dunes at Kohler-Andrae State Park, she knew that this guy\/gal was in the stink bug family (Pentatomidae), but it\u2019s more <a href=\"https:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/2125170\/bgpage\">spindle-shaped<\/a> and lacks the \u201cshoulder pads\u201d of a generic stink bug\u00a0(younger BugFans may have to Google \u201cshoulder pads\u201d).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignleft uwm-c-img--left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2024\/01\/kohler-andrae-cordwalk22-2rz.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2024\/01\/kohler-andrae-cordwalk22-2rz-300x215.webp\" alt=\"scenic view of a trail and grass field\" class=\"wp-image-14595\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2024\/01\/kohler-andrae-cordwalk22-2rz-300x215.webp 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2024\/01\/kohler-andrae-cordwalk22-2rz.webp 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It turned out to be a stink bug in the large subfamily\u00a0Pentatominae and\u00a0in the very small tribe\u00a0Aeliini, which has only 37 species worldwide.\u00a0There are 8 species in the tribe in North America (in two genera), and this is the only species in its genus here. The BugLady borrowed the name \u201cCereal bug\u201d from one of the European species because she couldn\u2019t find a common name for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cereal bugs (<em>Aelia americana<\/em>) have an odd, <a href=\"https:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/668478\/data\">patchwork range<\/a> (based on pictures submitted by bugguide members) that lies mostly west of the Mississippi \u2013 from British Columbia to Arizona to Alabama to Michigan, and within their range, they\u2019re not very common. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They feed by day on the ripening seeds of grasses, including agricultural crops like <a href=\"https:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/2241245\/bgimage\">wheat, barley, and rye<\/a>. The BugLady found some brief write-ups about them from grain-producing areas of the upper Great Plains into Canada, but they\u2019re not common enough to be a nuisance here.\u00a0Like other Hemipterans, they insert their beak into the plant, pump in some digestive juices, and suck out the softened tissue.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eggs are laid in late spring and early summer, and the nymphs reach maturity by fall and overwinter as adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignright uwm-c-img--right\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2024\/01\/bug-stink-aelia-23-2.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2024\/01\/bug-stink-aelia-23-2-300x215.webp\" alt=\"bug on wood\" class=\"wp-image-14596\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2024\/01\/bug-stink-aelia-23-2-300x215.webp 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/380\/2024\/01\/bug-stink-aelia-23-2.webp 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>[In the \u201cEternal Job Security\u201d category that is insect taxonomy, the BugLady found a paper titled \u201c<em>Opening Pandora&#8217;s box: molecular phylogeny of the stink bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) reveals great incongruences in the current classification<\/em>.\u201d&nbsp; It reminded her of a quote she found years ago when she was writing about a moth,&nbsp;\u201c<em>The genus&nbsp;Haploa<\/em><em>&nbsp;\u2026<\/em><em>\u2026 has furnished a great deal of amusement to classificationists<\/em>.\u201d&nbsp; Presumably, the Hemiptera taxonomists are similarly amused.]&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with grasses, they have been collected from apple trees in orchards, and according to a paper published by the Michigan Entomological Society, adults have been found overwintering in grass clumps and under mullein leaves.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some genus members are&nbsp;considered&nbsp;pests in the Middle East and around the Mediterranean, though, and the BugLady found a lot more information about a closely-related-and-very-similar-looking European species called (wonderfully) the Bishop\u2019s mitre (<em>Aelia acuminata<\/em>) than she did about our domestic species, but she suspects that the two are up to some of the same tricks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bishop\u2019s mitre (a mitre\/miter is a bishop\u2019s peaked, ceremonial hat) is found feeding on grasses in dry meadows and damaging cereal crops across Europe, North Africa, and northern Asia, and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fbritishbugs.org%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cxiong688%40uwm.edu%7Ccf8c7c1797804fa0cd8a08dc1c9c71e3%7C0bca7ac3fcb64efd89eb6de97603cf21%7C0%7C0%7C638416705517108350%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=x4CvJz%2BoK%2FrBV1Vy8nE0A%2FhwUWc9XokGsz7Y32tyieo%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">britishbugs.org<\/a>\u00a0website added that they may be found in sand dunes, too.\u00a0One British site said that the bugs resemble a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britishbugs.org.uk\/heteroptera\/Pentatomidae\/aelia_acuminata.html\">grass seed<\/a>.\u00a0They winter in grain fields, in leaf litter and other sheltered spots, and they migrate to wheat fields in spring when the wheat shoots appear (they\u2019re good flyers).\u00a0Before the seeds are formed, they feed on juices from the stems of young plants.\u00a0After harvest, they move to wild grasses.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies have shown that they enter diapause\/dormancy\/developmental arrest when the weather gets too hot in summer and go into hibernation when the weather gets too cold in fall.\u00a0The increasing day lengths of spring stimulate egg-laying, but if there\u2019s a cold snap, females will stop ovipositing.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Aelia americana\u00a0<\/em>was named by a British entomologist named William Sweetland (W.S.) Dallas (1824 \u2013 1890).\u00a0He published a book in 1857 called<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u00a0Elements of Entomology: An Outline of the Natural History and Classification of British Insects<\/span>\u00a0which is still in print today and about which the folks at Amazon say \u201c<em>This book is an essential resource for amateur and professional entomologists alike.
