{"id":14493,"date":"2023-12-07T09:08:22","date_gmt":"2023-12-07T15:08:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/?p=14493"},"modified":"2023-12-07T09:08:24","modified_gmt":"2023-12-07T15:08:24","slug":"sand-loving-bembidion-beetle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/bug-of-the-week\/sand-loving-bembidion-beetle\/","title":{"rendered":"Sand-loving Bembidion beetle"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"size-p-sm\">Note: All links leave to external sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Greetings, BugFans,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ground beetle family (Carabidae) contains some large and spectacular species\u00a0[ <a href=\"https:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/662415\/bgpage\">1<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/2138426\/bgimage\">2<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/2216522\/bgimage\">3<\/a> ] (including the <a href=\"https:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/1124395\/bgpage\">Tiger beetles<\/a>), but today\u2019s beetle is neither large nor flashy.\u00a0It\u2019s pretty fast, though.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With 2,440 species in North America and around 34,000 species worldwide, Carabidae is one of the largest insect families.\u00a0Most Carabids are active hunters, both as larvae and adults, and many species (but not the tiger beetles) are nocturnal.\u00a0Other than that, Carabids come in all sizes, shapes, and colors, and habits and habitats.\u00a0Many are chemically protected, with special glands where they can concoct noxious substances. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cool fact about Ground beetles: according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fbugguide.net%2F&amp;data=05%7C01%7Cxiong688%40uwm.edu%7Cbfb661cba8c34018d23d08dbf5fbac5c%7C0bca7ac3fcb64efd89eb6de97603cf21%7C0%7C0%7C638374233538028984%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=GT%2Fc2JUYWeQ5aAPzMB6a7tdWQsm%2FD5cibTzD9iywKp4%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bugguide.net<\/a>, \u201c<em>the front tibia has a prominent notch (antenna cleaner) on the inside near distal end.<\/em>\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BugLady was moseying around on the beach one August day when she spied an impossibly small beetle zipping over the sand.\u00a0So (of course) she aimed her camera at it as it ran around her and between her feet.\u00a0Bent over, with the 100mm lens about 2 \u00bd feet above the sand, this was the only shot worth keeping.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She figured out that it was in the genus\u00a0<em>Bembidion<\/em>\u00a0(though she guessed the species wrong).\u00a0<em>Bembidion<\/em>\u00a0is the largest genus in the Carabidae, and it\u2019s a complex one. Evans, in\u00a0Beetles of Eastern North America, says that \u201c<em>Bembidion is a large genus; species sometimes challenging to identify.<\/em>\u201d There are about 1,300 described species that are divided among about 100 subgenera, with more in the pipeline.\u00a0About 250 species live in North America, eight of them non-native.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a group, they are small (a half-inch or less), slender and somewhat flattened, dark and often metallic, speedy denizens of habitats near the water, especially river banks (though there are some grassland and desert species, too). Their range is described as (new science words)\u00a0<em>biantitropical<\/em>\u00a0or<em>\u00a0amphitropical\u00a0<\/em>\u2013 that is, they live at both southern and (mostly) northern latitudes, away from the tropics. They tend to appear on the landscape in spring and summer, they prey on tiny invertebrates, and they overwinter as adults.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BugLady sent the picture off to BugFan PJ for his thoughts.\u00a0He thought he should send it along to a ground beetle specialist, who wrote, \u201c<em>Kate\u2019s culprit is likely Bembidion (subspecies Bracteon) carinula Chaudoir. <a href=\"https:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/109039\">See\u00a0here<\/a>. This is an abundant species that runs fast on wet sandy shores of Lake Michigan during warm sunlight in midsummer. They often fly when approached.<\/em>\u201d\u00a0 Thanks, Gentlemen \u2013 it takes a village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the few sources of information that she found didn\u2019t list a common name, but the Canadian NWT Species Search website calls it, logically, the Sand-loving\u00a0<em>Bembidion<\/em>\u00a0Beetle.\u00a0Its range covers much of Canada and across the northern tier of the US into New England (with some records in Iowa, Kentucky, and New Jersey).\u00a0It\u2019s seen on sparsely-vegetated shores, often on dry sand, and though it\u2019s not uncommon, it may be hard to see because it\u2019s only 3\/8\u201d in length and it moves along like the\u00a0<em>Roadrunner<\/em>.\u00a0It\u2019s active during the day, and the\u00a0adults are good fliers.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The checkerboard pattern on its elytra is more conspicuous in some <a href=\"https:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/842164\/bgimage\">individuals<\/a>\u00a0than in <a href=\"https:\/\/bugguide.net\/node\/view\/51503\/bgimage\">others<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other than the fact that it appears on a number of\u00a0\u201c<em>The Ground Beetles of (Wherever)<\/em>\u201d\u00a0surveys and checklists, and it\u2019s a species of\u00a0Special Concern on Connecticut, there\u2019s not much out there about\u00a0Sand-loving\u00a0<em>Bembidion<\/em>\u00a0beetles.\u00a0As always, several sites offered to tell the BugLady what words rhyme with\u00a0<em>Bembidion<\/em>, and\u00a0yes, you can order a\u00a0<em>Bembidion<\/em>\u00a0beetle Sun catcher and a belt buckle online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The BugLady<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"taxonomy-post_tag wp-block-post-terms\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/tag\/beetles\/\" rel=\"tag\">Beetles<\/a><span class=\"wp-block-post-terms__separator\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/tag\/bembidion-beetles\/\" rel=\"tag\">Bembidion beetles<\/a><span class=\"wp-block-post-terms__separator\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/tag\/bugs\/\" rel=\"tag\">bugs<\/a><span class=\"wp-block-post-terms__separator\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/tag\/ground-beetles\/\" rel=\"tag\">ground beetles<\/a><span class=\"wp-block-post-terms__separator\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/tag\/insects\/\" rel=\"tag\">insects<\/a><span class=\"wp-block-post-terms__separator\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/field-station\/tag\/sand-loving-bembidion-beetles\/\" rel=\"tag\">Sand-loving Bembidion beetles<\/a><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Note: All links leave to external sites.
