Instructor<\/strong>:\u00a0 Dr. Michael J. Pauers received his Ph.D. from UW-Milwaukee in 2004.\u00a0 His major research interests are the evolution and behavior of fishes, especially the cichlids of Lake Mala\u0175i, Africa, where he currently collaborates with the Malawi Department of Fisheries on a project examining the taxonomy and phylogeography of the fishes of the genus Labeotropheus<\/em>. He also has extensive experience with the fishes of Wisconsin, both as an educator and researcher of fish diversity. He is currently an Associate Professor of Zoology at UW-Milwaukee at Waukesha, and is the Adjunct Curator of Fishes and Orth Family Ichthyology Research Fellow at the Milwaukee Public Museum.<\/p>\n The Course<\/strong>: Wisconsin\u00a0is home to 147 native species of fishes, ranging from parasitic lampreys to colorful darters to majestic pikes and prehistoric sturgeons. This workshop will present the breadth of fish diversity in southeast Wisconsin, with an emphasis on the taxonomy and ecology of our native fishes, as well as how to identify them. The class will cover the basics of fish taxonomy and anatomy, as well as some basic fish biology.\u00a0 The field session will offer opportunities to learn how to safely and effectively capture fishes in the wild; to learn \u201con-site\u201d identification of fishes in the field; and opportunities for further discussions about the ecology and evolution of fishes. Students should come prepared to get wet and\/or muddy!<\/p>\n Participants will need to drive their own vehicles to nearby field sites.<\/p>\n Lodging Accommodations & Food: Workshop fee:<\/strong> $140. Available for 1.4 CEU. Not offered for college credit.<\/p>\n Useful materials to bring to the field session<\/strong>: \u00a0Most of the equipment\/supplies listed here are SUGGESTIONS; i.e., not mandatory.\u00a0 Some of these things (e.g., towels, dry clothes, wading shoes) you will definitely want to have with you, including: a waterproof field notebook (good for taking notes not only in the field, but also in lab), swimsuits or other clothes you wouldn\u2019t mind getting wet and\/or dirty,\u00a0 old tennis shoes or aqua socks or other good aquatic foot coverings (for wading), rubber or neoprene waders (NOT breathable) \u2013 these will be used if we get a chance to collect fishes via electroshocking, a towel, change of dry clothes.<\/p>\n Registration: <\/strong>Registration for this workshop is currently closed. <\/strong>The workshop fee does not include overnight accommodations. However, tent camping space on the property is available at no charge. Participants wishing to stay overnight in our Farmhouse may reserve a bed in a shared space at a cost of $20 per night. Bed space is limited so be sure to reserve early. Alternatively, the Saukville Field Station can also provide you with a list of nearby places to stay. An optional catered lunch is provided at cost for an additional charge and will include vegetarian and gluten free options. Meal plan should be ordered at the time your registration is submitted.
