SUMMARY:FOCB Event: Dragonflies w/ Jamie Schisse
DESCRIPTION:Join Jamie Schiesel for a short indoor program followed by a field trip through the Cedarburg Bog looking for odonates (dragonflies and damselflies). Wisconsin has 160+ species of odonates to see from April all the way to early November. Learn about the anatomy and life cycle of these ancient insects\, and have the opportunity to see them up close in the field. The bog is home to many families of odonates\, each with unique colors\, size\, and lifestyle to discover! Jamie works at the Mequon Nature Preserve as the Ecological Education Manager and is a current board member of the Wisconsin Dragonfly Society. Bug nets will be provided during this exciting adventure and although kids are welcome\, this program will focus on adult education and comprehension in identification of many species of odonates. Registration is required.

SUMMARY:NS Workshop: Fishes of Wisconsin
DESCRIPTION:Wisconsin is home to 147 native species of fishes\, ranging from parasitic lampreys to colorful darters to majestic pikes and prehistoric sturgeons. This workshop will present the breadth of fish diversity in southeast Wisconsin\, with an emphasis on the taxonomy and ecology of our native fishes\, as well as how to identify them. The class will cover the basics of fish taxonomy and anatomy\, as well as some basic fish biology.  The field session will offer opportunities to learn how to safely and effectively capture fishes in the wild; to learn “on-site” identification of fishes in the field; and opportunities for further discussions about the ecology and evolution of fishes. Students should come prepared to get wet and/or muddy!

SUMMARY:FOCB Event: Birding the Bog II
DESCRIPTION:Based on the uniqueness and diversity of habitats\, the Cedarburg Bog is home to a number of “specialty” bird species uncommon to rare in Southeast Wisconsin. For these reasons\, the Bog was designated as an Important Bird Area by the Wisconsin Conservation Bird Initiative in 2006. On this outing\, we should find species such as Scarlet Tanager\, Wood Duck\, Least Flycatcher\, Sandhill Crane\, and Eastern Bluebird; however\, we will especially target specialty species such as Acadian and Alder Flycatchers\, Black-billed Cuckoo\, Least Bittern\, Sora and Virginia Rails\, Northern Waterthrush\, Henslow’s Sparrow\, and more. Birding will take place in a variety of settings\, e.g.\, prairie\, climax forest\, marsh\, bog\, and possibly the shoreline of Mud Lake. Registration is required. \nLeaders: Alex Mann   Alex is a  highly experienced birder well acquainted with the intricacies of the Cedarburg Bog.

SUMMARY:NS Workshop: Botanical Diversity - From Algae to Angiosperms
DESCRIPTION:This course will focus on a survey of basic information of the major groups of microscopic algae (plant ancestors) mosses\, ferns\, conifers and flowering plants with a focus on morphology\, reproduction and dispersal\, and evolutionary relationships. How are their “bodies” put together?  How do they develop and reproduce?  How did they evolve and how are they related?  What makes them important in the ecological landscape? The emphasis will be on life cycles and how similarities and differences will reveal the phylogenies of these organisms.  Lectures will be interspersed with forays into field to find and identify organisms discussed in the classroom.
