SUMMARY:Saukville Field Station Annual Garlic Mustard hunt
DESCRIPTION:We need volunteers to help search for garlic mustard in the Saukville Field Station’s Beech-Maple woods and surrounding property borders. We could really use your help! \nThis project is primarily just a nice walk through the woods and fields. The walk is brisk\, off-trail\, and through very hilly terrain (good exercise)\, but the job is not strenuous in any other way. The forest will be very beautiful in its spring green. Are you sold on helping us yet? \nThe beech/maple forest at the Saukville Field Station and adjacent private land has very little garlic mustard. We have worked to keep it that way. It is very important that we do a thorough search each year to make sure that we find and eliminate any new plants that have come into the woods. This search allows us to see every part of the forest. (Rain date – Thursday\, June 5) \nPlease contact the Field Station at fieldstn@uwm.edu or call 414-659-4179 to let us know you are willing to help.

SUMMARY:NS Workshop: Sedges - Identification and Ecology
DESCRIPTION:Identification of sedges\, especially Carex\, will stress not only keying skills\, but using ecological and vegetative characters to identify species and species groups. In addition to identification\, we will explore the importance of sedges in a variety of different communities and gain an appreciation of the dynamics of some of the communities and the role of sedges in these dynamics. \n**Both Registration and the Waitlist are full due to popular demand.  Please check back next year!

SUMMARY:FOCB Event: Birding the Bog I
DESCRIPTION:Based on the uniqueness and diversity of habitats\, the Cedarburg Bog is home to a number of “specialty” bird species uncommon to rare in Southeast Wisconsin. For these reasons\, the Bog was designated as an Important Bird Area by the Wisconsin Conservation Bird Initiative in 2006. On this outing\, we should find species such as Scarlet Tanager\, Wood Duck\, Least Flycatcher\, Sandhill Crane\, and Eastern Bluebird; however\, we will especially target specialty species such as Acadian and Alder Flycatchers\, Black-billed Cuckoo\, Least Bittern\, Sora and Virginia Rails\, Northern Waterthrush\, Henslow’s Sparrow\, and more. Birding will take place in a variety of settings\, e.g.\, prairie\, climax forest\, marsh\, bog\, and possibly the shoreline of Mud Lake. Registration is required. \nLeaders: Alex Mann and John O’Donnell     Alex and John are highly experienced birders well acquainted with the intricacies of the Cedarburg Bog.
