SUMMARY:Winter Hike and Potluck
DESCRIPTION:Winter Hike 1:30 – 4:30 PM \nWinter presents the opportunity to explore the interior of the Cedarburg Bog. Field Station Director\, Jim Reinartz will lead the annual hike into the heart of the Bog. This is a 4-mile hike\, and weather or snow and ice conditions can make this hike challenging. In the past we have hiked in bitter cold\, on a warm day with wet slush over the ice\, in deep snow\, with no snow at all on very slick ice\, and when we were lucky\, with a little snow over solid ice. If ice conditions in the Bog are not safe\, we will hike in the uplands instead. We will update this website several days prior to the hike with snow and ice conditions. \nChili Dinner 4:30 PM \nThe Friends of the Cedarburg Bog are hosting a Chili Dinner Potluck after the Winter Hike. The Friends will have lots of chili ready as well as beverages. Bring a dish to share – side dish\, salad\, dessert – all are appreciated and enjoyed! It’s a wonderful way to finish up the hike but please join us for the potluck even if you don’t plan to hike. Suggested donation for the Hike and Dinner is $5 \nUpdate on Conditions by Jim Reinartz – Feb. 8\, 2019 \nI hiked to Long and Donut Lakes in the Cedarburg Bog Friday afternoon\, 2/8. It was beautiful\, as always. \nThe entire trail is extremely slick and uneven ice. Ice cleats are required for the hike in the Bog on Sunday. I think that any alternate hike we could take in the uplands of the Field Station could be almost as slick. \nHike safety: \n* Hikers will be required to wear ice cleats\, or ice traction devices\, on their boots. The risk of a fall and injury is too high\, and the hike will not be enjoyable\, without ice traction devices. \n* Wear good winter boots. If you stay on the trail there is very little chance that you will poke a foot through the ice and get a wet foot\, but there is always some small chance that could happen. \n* STAY on the TRAIL. There were three places where the ice is weak just off the route we will walk. I have found a safe path\, but if you get creative with your route\, the chances of a wet foot increase substantially. There is no place with weak ice where you could get any more wet than a wet foot. The ice on the lakes is solid. \n* I think that one of the highest probability risks for a severe injury in the Bog is a serious poke in the eye. I recommend wearing glasses\, preferably wrap-around glasses or sun glasses. We are in a wilderness\, not on a real trail. \n* There is no formal trail where we hike in the State Natural Area and we are not authorized to make one. I try to remove all of the Poison Sumac along the deer paths that we follow\, but there is a chance that I might have missed one. In general\, if you know that you are severely allergic to Poison Ivy (same oil as Poison Sumac)\, the Bog may not be a safe place for you. \n* Wear layers to keep warm. \nThat’s all I can think of right now. If you are not scared off yet\, we are in for a beautiful hike on Sunday.
