SUMMARY:Workshop - Unraveling the Mysteries of Bird Migration
DESCRIPTION:Instructors: Vicki Piaskowski is an ornithologist and the retired international coordinator of the Birds Without Borders-Aves Sin Fronteras© project of the Foundation for Wildlife Conservation\, Inc and the Zoological Society of Milwaukee. She has conducted ornithological field research and training in the U.S. and in Belize\, Central America. She will be assisted byJennifer Callaghan\, Research and Citizen Science Coordinator at the Urban Ecology Center. \nThe Course: This course will be conducted during fall migration so that students can experience one of the most exciting aspects of the avian life cycle: migration. Students will have an opportunity to learn about bird banding techniques as well as other methods used to study bird migration. Mornings will consist of fieldwork\, including the observation of mist netting and bird banding\, and demonstration of aging and sexing techniques. Afternoons will consist of lectures that will provide students with basic information on bird banding\, bird migration\, and how research techniques are used to solve some of the mysteries of ornithology. \nWorkshop fee: $105.00. Available for 1.4 CEU or 1 college credit. There is an additional tuition fee for college credit.

SUMMARY:Workshop - “Wisdom Sits in Places”: Creative Writing About the Natural World
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Poet\, photographer\, and scholar\, Kimberly Blaeser\, is the Wisconsin Poet Laureate.  A Professor at UW—Milwaukee\, she teaches Creative Writing\, Native American Literature\, and American Nature Writing. Her publications include three books of poetry:Trailing You\, Absentee Indians and Other Poems\, and Apprenticed to Justice. Her creative work in poetry\, creative non-fiction\, and short fiction\, frequently arises from a relationship with the natural world and has been included in more than fifty volumes whose titles are as varied as The Colours of Nature\, Sing: Poems from the Indigenous Americas\, and Women on Hunting. \nThe Course: Using the natural areas found at the UWM Field Station and inspired by both Native mythic accounts and the works of natural history writers and eco-poets\, this course will invite participants to create works of poetry\, creative non-fiction\, and mixed-genre arising from their engagement with the natural world.  These writings will include haiku and other poetry\, personal nature essays\, and works combining artistic genres.  Class time will be divided between expeditions exploring the bogs\, fields\, forests\, and ponds; sessions discussing sample readings and focusing on writing craft; and the process of writing\, reflecting\, and “translating” our nature experiences into creative works.  Students need no prior experience in ecology or writing to benefit from this course.  All levels of expertise are encouraged to enroll. \nWorkshop fee: $105.00. Available for 1.4 CEU or 1 college credit. There is an additional tuition fee for college credit.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Ecology and Physiology of Plants in Winter
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Dr. James Reinartz\, Director\, UWM Field Station is a plant ecologist and evolutionary biologist. \nThe Course: The plants of temperate and boreal regions have several anatomical and physiological adaptations that allow them to survive low temperatures. Minimum temperatures set the range limits for many species\, and snow and ice loading can be important constraints on the morphology of northern trees. Some woody plants can photosynthesize in the winter\, which is also an important time for seed dispersal. This workshop will explore all of the aspects of plant life in the winter\, especially what is known about the special adaptations that allow northern plants to survive the freezing and drought associated with extreme cold. We also spend some time learning the basic characteristics used to identify woody plants in the winter. This class includes a balance of indoor and outdoor study\, lecture and hands-on activity. \nRecommended Materials: Hands lens and field clothing; we will spend some time outside. If you have\, or want to make\, any collections of native woody plants in the winter\, bring them along and we will try to learn to identify them in winter condition. If you are staying overnight and there is a chance that ice will be smooth\, bring your ice skates; bring skis or snowshoes if there is nice snow. The workshop fee includes a winter fruit and twig key and we will spend some of our time learning winter plant identification\, although that is not the main focus of the course. \nWorkshop Fee: $110.00. Available for 1.4 CEU or 1 college credit. There is an additional tuition fee for college credit. Meals are optional and are extra. Sign up for meals when you register.

SUMMARY:Annual Winter Hike on the Bog
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by the Friends of Cedarburg Bog \nIce Conditions as of Friday\, 1/27/2017 \n\nConditions may change by Sunday\, 1/29.  We still don’t know where we will hike on Sunday.  At this point it looks unlikely that we will go far into the Bog.\nWe will have a very nice hike planned even if we can’t go out on the Bog.\nTo the extent that we do go into the Bog the ice will most likely not be as slick as previously predicted because of the recent snow.\nAll hikers must be willing to accept the risk of falling\, regardless of the hike.\n\nIce Conditions as of Monday\, 1/23/2017 \n\nThis information may be updated by the end of the week\, as conditions may change by Sunday\, 1/29.  However\, it is not supposed to get cold until Friday\, so we probably won’t know where we can hike until Sunday.\nWe will have a very nice hike planned even if we can’t go out on the Bog.\nThere may be solid\, safe ice all the way to Long\, and Donut Lakes; but if there is\, it is likely to be very slick.  We do not recommend hiking on the ice without “Gripons”\, or ice cleats.\nFriends of Cedarburg Bog will have Gripons available for sale for $16/pair\, cash or check.\nIf the ice is safe\, but very slick\, we will also offer another nice hike for those who do not feel comfortable on the slick ice.\nAll hikers must be willing to accept the risk of falling\, regardless of the hike.\n\nWinter is a great time to explore the Cedarburg Bog. Field Station Director\, Jim Reinartz will lead the annual hike into the heart of the Bog if the Bog is solidly frozen and the ice is safe. This is a 4-mile hike\, and weather and/or snow and ice conditions can make this hike challenging. In the past we have hiked in bitter cold\, on a warm day with wet slush over the ice\, in deep snow\, with no snow at all on very slick ice\, and when we are lucky\, with a little snow over solid ice. If the Bog is not solidly frozen\, we will still take a hike in the uplands. \nBog hikers must be willing to accept the risk associated with this hike off-trail in the Bog. There is always an unavoidable risk of tripping and falling. Glasses are always a good safety measure to avoid getting poked in the eye. \nNo dogs\, Please! \nAnnual Friends of the Cedarburg Bog Potluck Chili Supper\nFollowing the winter hike at 4:30 pm \nYou don’t have to get chilly to eat chili! Hikers and non-hikers are welcome to celebrate winter in the Bog. The Friends of the Cedarburg Bog will provide the chili and beverages; if you can\, bring a dish to share. \nFriends of the Cedarburg Bog suggested donation for Hike and Potluck – $5 \nPlease register at the Friends of the Cedarburg Bog website (click on the Events tab). You can also call (262) 675-6844 or email fieldstn@uwm.edu to make a reservation for the hike\, supper\, or both! Please give us your name\, phone number\, and tell us what you will be bringing to the potluck (if you are coming to the chili supper).
